What is cheese paper?

Cheese paper is the sheet a cheesemonger wraps a freshly cut piece in before it goes into the customer's bag. It covers the cut faces and turns a wedge into a tidy parcel.

Our sheets are made from greaseproof paper in white or a kraft tone. The photos show both: a crumpled kraft-toned sheet under a soft round, and a white sheet folded loosely around another.

Unlike cling film, a paper parcel can be unwrapped and folded back again at home. That makes it easy for customers to keep using the same wrap through the week.

Who orders printed cheese paper?

Anyone who cuts cheese to order rather than selling it pre-packed. For these shops, the paper is the packaging, so it is the natural place for the brand.

Cheese is often bought as a treat or a gift, so presentation matters more than at most food counters. A printed parcel feels like part of what the customer paid for.

  • Specialist cheesemongers cutting from whole wheels
  • Delicatessens with a cheese counter beside the charcuterie
  • Farm shops selling cheese from local dairies
  • Market traders with a cheese stall at weekly markets
  • Cheese makers wrapping their own rounds for sale and hampers

How big should a cheese wrapping sheet be?

The sheet has to cover the cut faces and fold over itself with room to secure it. A good test is that the sheet reaches around the piece once, with about a third left over.

Most counters manage with two sizes: one for everyday wedges and one for whole rounds and blocks. A third, smaller sheet helps if you sell tasting portions. Our food packaging sizes guide for the UK has more help on picking sheet sizes.

How do you wrap a wedge neatly?

A neat fold makes the shop look careful and keeps the paper close to the cut faces. Teach every member of staff the same method so parcels look alike.

Practise on scrap paper before the printed sheets arrive. It helps staff learn where the print lands once the parcel is closed.

  1. Lay the sheet print side down with one corner pointing towards you.
  2. Place the wedge in the centre, with its widest cut face down.
  3. Fold the near corner over the wedge and tuck it under the point.
  4. Fold in the two sides tightly, like the ends of a present.
  5. Roll the parcel over the far corner and secure it with a label or string.

Which print style suits a cheese counter?

Cheese shops tend to favour quiet designs. A light one-colour repeat or a single shop name in the corner suits the counter better than a busy pattern.

The white sheets in our photos use small drawn animals and crossed knives in a fine grey ink. The orange example uses a bolder repeat for a brighter, more casual brand.

If you sell your own cheese under a dairy name, the paper can carry that name too. Keep it small so the counter still feels like a shop rather than a single brand.

Does cheese paper cope with soft and oily cheese?

Soft and washed rind cheeses release butterfat as they warm. Greaseproof paper holds it back, so the outside of the parcel stays clean in the bag.

Wrap ripe soft cheese snugly but not crushed, and put the cut face down on the paper. Food-contact cheese paper is available on request; tell us which cheeses you wrap and we name the paper on the quote. Our explainer on greaseproof paper covers the materials in plain terms.

Hard cheeses are easier. They need a snug wrap mainly to cover the cut faces, so a slightly smaller sheet often does the job.

White or kraft-toned paper?

White paper looks clean and lets printed colours show at full strength. It suits fresh cheeses, goat's cheese and a bright modern counter.

Kraft-toned paper looks rustic and warm. It suits farmhouse cheeses, a wooden counter and parcels tied with string, like the stack in our final photo. Dark inks read best on it, so pick navy, black or a deep green over pale colours.

Some shops use both: white for fresh and soft cheeses, kraft-toned for hard and aged ones. It gives staff a quick visual cue when parcels are packed together.

Can cheese paper go into gift parcels and hampers?

Yes. A printed sheet tied with string looks finished enough to go straight into a hamper or gift box. That saves extra packaging on gift orders.

For hampers, choose the larger sheet size so the parcel can be wrapped fully, with the print showing on the top face. If you also pack crackers or chutney in a branded box, ask about matching the print across both items.

Counter tips for cheese paper

Keep the sheets in a dry drawer near the cutting board, away from the cold, damp air of the display chiller. Damp sheets stick together and fold badly.

Have the two main sizes within reach of the wire and the knife. The fewer steps between cutting and wrapping, the less time the cut face spends in the open air.

Keep a pen and labels by the paper if you write the cheese name and weight on each parcel. A label on the top fold also holds the wrap closed.

What mistakes should cheese shops avoid?

  • Ordering one sheet size and wasting paper on every small wedge
  • Choosing pale ink on kraft-toned paper, so the shop name disappears
  • Printing a dense pattern that makes a quiet counter look busy
  • Storing bundles beside the chiller where they pick up damp
  • Placing the logo where it ends up folded inside the parcel

Cheese Paper: questions buyers ask

Still unsure? Call +44 7578 382054, ask us on WhatsApp or write to info@thefoodpackaging.co.uk.

What size cheese paper do I need for a 250 g wedge?

A 250 × 250 mm sheet is a common choice for a wedge of that weight. Measure a typical cut and we can confirm the size on the proof.

Is cheese paper the same as greaseproof paper?

Our cheese paper is made from greaseproof paper, cut to sizes that suit cheese and printed for the counter.

Can cheese paper be printed with my shop name only?

Yes. A single name or mark in one corner suits a traditional counter and uses very little ink.

Will cheese paper keep butterfat off the customer's bag?

Greaseproof paper holds back the fat from soft cheeses, so the outside of the parcel stays clean on the way home.

Can I choose kraft-toned cheese paper?

Yes. Choose white or kraft-toned paper. Dark inks such as navy or black show best on the kraft tone.

How many sizes of cheese paper should a counter keep?

Two sizes cover most counters: one for wedges and one for whole rounds and blocks. A small third size helps with tasting portions.

Is printed cheese paper suitable for direct contact with cheese?

Food-contact materials are available on request. We confirm the paper for your cheese counter on the written quote.

Can I tie cheese paper parcels with string?

Yes. Kraft-toned sheets tied with string look good in hampers. Leave enough paper at the ends for a tidy fold.

Can a cheese maker use printed sheets for whole rounds?

Yes. Choose a larger sheet that wraps the round completely, with the print placed on the face that shows.

How long until printed cheese paper arrives?

Cheese paper is made in 4–6 business days after proof approval. It then travels free and tracked to your UK address in 2–3 business days.

Can I see a proof of my cheese paper design?

Yes. A free proof comes before printing, and our designers can adjust the pattern spacing until it looks right.
