Quick answer

What are doughnut boxes?

Doughnut boxes are folding board boxes sized to hold a set number of doughnuts side by side without crushing the toppings. Bakeries and doughnut shops use them for single treats, pairs, half dozens and dozens. Each box is made to your count and size, in white or kraft board, plain or printed.

What makes a box right for doughnuts?

Doughnuts are wide, soft and often sticky on top. A good box holds them flat, side by side, with clear space between the topping and the lid.

That is the main difference from a general bakery box. The size is worked out from a set count and the diameter of your doughnut, not from a single bake.

A doughnut that slides around a half-empty box loses its glaze against the walls. Matching the box to the count keeps every doughnut in its place until it is lifted out.

Which doughnut box styles are there?

Our photos show four styles, each suited to a different way of selling. A kraft gable box with a front window carries a pair, and a purple lid-and-base box holds one.

A white tuck-lid box has a round window over a single ring doughnut, and a long white box shows six through a lid window. If you mainly sell cakes and buns too, compare our window bakery boxes for other bakes.

How do I size a box for six doughnuts?

Start from your largest doughnut, not your average one. Filled and topped varieties often come out wider and taller than plain rings.

Follow these steps for any count.

If you sell mini doughnuts, size by the number across and deep in the same way. Minis often sit in rows of four or five, so a shallow box keeps them from tumbling over.

  1. Measure the widest diameter of your largest doughnut.
  2. Multiply by the number across and the number deep, for example three by two for a six.
  3. Add about 5 mm between doughnuts and 5 mm at each wall.
  4. Measure the tallest topping and add 10 to 15 mm for the height.
  5. Send these figures and we confirm the inside size on your free proof.

Why does height matter so much?

Sprinkles, cereal toppings, piped cream and broken biscuit all stand proud of the doughnut. If the lid touches them, the topping ends up stuck to the board.

Box height should cover your tallest variety, not your plain glazed. The long box of six in our photos has room above a cream-topped doughnut, which is why it looks tidy through the window.

Do not overdo it either. A box much taller than the doughnuts lets them shift and tip on the journey, so aim for a small, even gap.

Will glaze and filling mark the board?

Sugar glaze, jam and frying oil can all mark plain board, especially on a warm day. A grease-resistant coating or lining is available on request for doughnut boxes.

Let glaze set before boxing, and keep filled doughnuts upright. Food-contact doughnut boxes are available on request and confirmed on your written quote. Our guide to greaseproof paper and coatings explains how coatings and linings differ.

On hot days, keep boxed doughnuts out of direct sun on the counter. Warm glaze softens and slides, whatever box it sits in.

Which businesses order printed doughnut boxes?

Any seller handing over more than one doughnut at a time gets value from a proper box. A bag works for one plain ring, but toppings need walls and a lid.

For one plain sugared ring, a small paper bag is often enough. Our greaseproof paper bags for single bakes suit that quick counter sale.

  • Doughnut shops selling by the half dozen and dozen
  • High street bakeries with a doughnut counter
  • Market stalls and street food vans frying to order
  • Cafés selling a single filled doughnut with coffee
  • Event caterers bringing boxed dozens to offices and parties

How should I brand a doughnut box?

The lid is the face of the box, so the logo usually goes there, framed around the window. Sides can carry a short message, flavours or your social handle.

White board shows bright colours well, as the pink and purple box in our photos shows. Kraft board suits a simple one-colour logo for a more homemade look. Inside print is available, so a dozen box can reveal a pattern or a message when it opens.

Keep the flavour names off the box if your menu changes weekly. A blank label area on the side lets staff write or stick the flavours instead.

Boxes for birthdays, office treats and Halloween

Dozen boxes are a staple for birthdays and office treats. A printed lid makes the box look like a gift, even when it is a Friday morning order.

Seasonal runs for Halloween, Easter or Valentine's Day can use a separate print on the same box size. Plan the artwork early so the proof, production and delivery fit before the date.

A mixed dozen also works as a tasting box for new flavours. Printing a simple grid on the inside of the lid lets customers tick off what they tried.

Packing tips for doughnut boxes

Fold a stack of boxes before frying starts, so filled doughnuts go straight in once the glaze sets. A small square of greaseproof paper under a filled doughnut stops jam reaching the board.

Carry dozen boxes flat and never stack heavy items on top. For delivery, a box that fits the bag snugly stops the doughnuts sliding into each other on corners.

Wipe the counter between batches when boxing glazed doughnuts. Sticky board edges pick up crumbs and make the folded box look tired before it leaves the shop.

What goes wrong with doughnut box orders?

  • Sizing from plain rings, so filled and topped varieties do not fit
  • Choosing a box too low, so sprinkles stick to the lid
  • Packing six into a box made for a tighter row of smaller doughnuts
  • Boxing doughnuts before the glaze has set
  • Printing artwork where the window will be cut out

Doughnut Boxes: questions buyers ask

Still unsure? Call +44 7578 382054, ask us on WhatsApp or write to info@thefoodpackaging.co.uk.

What size box holds six doughnuts?

A box around 280 × 190 × 70 mm suits six average doughnuts in two rows of three. Measure your largest one so we can confirm.

Can a doughnut box have a round window?

Yes. A round or rectangular window can be cut into the lid on suitable styles, framed by your print.

How tall should a doughnut box be for topped doughnuts?

Measure the tallest topping and add 10 to 15 mm. That keeps sprinkles and cream clear of the lid.

Can I get a single doughnut box with a separate lid?

Yes. A lid-and-base style suits single premium doughnuts and gifts, and it can be printed on both parts.

Will jam or glaze soak into a doughnut box?

Plain board can mark. A grease-resistant coating or lining is available on request, and a small paper square helps under filled doughnuts.

Do doughnut boxes come with a handle?

A gable style with a carry handle is available, which suits pairs and fours carried by hand.

Can a dozen doughnut box be printed inside?

Yes. Inside print is available, so a pattern or message shows when the lid is opened.

Are doughnut boxes suitable for direct food contact?

Food-contact materials are available on request. We confirm the board for your doughnut boxes on the written quote.

Can I order doughnut boxes for Halloween?

Yes. Seasonal designs can be printed on the same box size, so allow time for the proof and production before the date.

Are doughnut boxes supplied flat?

Yes. They arrive flat and fold together at the counter, which keeps storage space down.

How long do printed doughnut boxes take to arrive?

Allow 4–6 business days to make the boxes after proof approval, plus 2–3 business days for free tracked UK delivery.

Can I order two doughnut box sizes together?

Yes. Many shops order a single box and a dozen box with matching print. See our bakery packaging range for other sizes.
