What are window bakery boxes?

They are folding board boxes with a window cut into one panel. The bake is on show from the moment it leaves the counter, without anyone lifting the lid.

Our photos cover the main variations. There are small kraft boxes with a lid window around a cinnamon swirl, and a printed box with a wide side window.

You will also see a gable carry box with a front window. The last two are shallow trays with a window across the top, filled with cookies and treats.

Who uses windowed boxes?

A window does the selling for you when the bake looks good. That makes these boxes a favourite where display matters.

Windows also cut down on questions at the counter. Customers can check they have the right flavour without asking staff to open the box.

  • Bakeries selling single buns, tarts and slices to take away
  • Cafés with a cake counter and grab-and-go treats
  • Home bakers selling at markets and through local orders
  • Cookie and brownie brands packing gift selections
  • Farm shops and delis selling local bakes from the shelf

Where should the window go: lid, side or front?

The window should face the way customers look at the box. A box picked up from a counter is seen from above, while a box on a shelf is seen from the front.

Every window takes away a little strength from that panel, so very large windows suit lighter bakes.

For counter sales, a lid window is the safe default. If your boxes sit in a shop chiller or on a shelf, a side or front window is usually the better choice.

Which box style should I choose?

A lock-corner box with a tuck lid is the everyday choice. It folds up in seconds and stacks well in a display or a carrier bag.

A gable box with a carry handle suits single cakes and gifts that customers walk away with. The kraft cupcake box in our photos is one example. Shallow tray-style boxes suit cookies and assortments laid flat.

For a single cupcake or a set of six, our printed cupcake boxes are made specifically around cupcake holders.

How do I size a window box for my bakes?

Measure the bake, then add a small gap so it does not touch the walls or press against the window. Iced or glazed tops need extra height.

Use these steps to get a size that works.

  1. Measure the length, width and height of your largest bake for that box.
  2. Add about 10 mm to length and width so the bake lifts out easily.
  3. Add 10 to 15 mm to the height for icing, glaze or toppings.
  4. Decide the window position, then check the bake looks best from that side.
  5. Send the sizes and we confirm them, with the window marked, on your free proof.

White or kraft board for a window box?

Kraft board gives a natural, handmade look and suits rustic bakes, sourdough buns and cookies. Most of the plain boxes in our photos are kraft.

White board makes printed colours look brighter, so it suits patterned designs like the polka dot and illustrated boxes shown. Either board can be printed outside, and inside print is available too.

If you sell both rustic and decorated bakes, you can order one board for each range. Customers soon learn which box holds which kind of treat.

What about butter and glaze on the board?

Buttery pastry and sticky glazes can mark plain board over a few hours. A grease-resistant coating or lining is available on request for richer bakes.

Let glazed items set before boxing, and avoid pressing icing against the window. Food-contact board is available on request, with the material named on your quote. Our guide to coated board and linings explains the options.

Fruit tarts and cream-filled bakes release moisture as well as fat. Box them close to sale time, and keep those boxes chilled where your food hygiene routine requires it.

How should a window box be printed?

Design around the window, not over it. The window is part of the layout, so frame it with your logo, product name or a pattern border.

The printed examples in our photos show two approaches. One uses an all-over dot pattern with a block of colour on the end panel. The other uses line illustrations and a printed label area with the bake's name. Our designers mark the window on the proof so nothing important falls into the cut-out.

Leave a clear margin of plain board around the window edge. It makes the cut look clean and keeps small text from sitting too close to the opening.

Packing and display tips

Fold a batch of boxes before the morning rush rather than one at a time. Folded tuck-lid boxes nest loosely and save time at the till.

Line up boxed bakes with the windows all facing out. A neat row of open windows on the counter works like a second display case.

Keep folded boxes away from the oven and dishwasher. Board that picks up steam can soften at the corners and lose its crisp shape.

What mistakes are common with window boxes?

  • Putting the window on the lid for a bake that looks best from the side
  • Choosing a box too shallow, so icing smears across the window
  • Placing text or a logo where the window will be cut out
  • Making the window so large that the box loses its strength
  • Boxing warm, glazed bakes before the glaze has set

Window Bakery Boxes: questions buyers ask

Still unsure? Call +44 7578 382054, ask us on WhatsApp or write to info@thefoodpackaging.co.uk.

Can the window go on the side of a bakery box instead of the lid?

Yes. Lid, side and front windows are all possible on suitable styles, and we show the position on your proof.

What size window box fits one cinnamon bun?

A box around 100 × 100 × 75 mm suits most single buns. Measure your largest bun and add room for any icing.

Do window bakery boxes come with a carry handle?

A gable style with a carry handle is available, and it suits single cakes, cupcakes and small gifts.

Can I order kraft window boxes with my logo printed?

Yes. Kraft board prints well with dark inks, and our designers place the logo around the window on the proof.

Will icing stick to the window of a bakery box?

It can if the box is too shallow. Add 10 to 15 mm to the height for icing and toppings.

Are window bakery boxes delivered flat?

Yes. They arrive flat and fold together at the counter, which saves storage space.

Can buttery pastries mark a window box?

Plain board can mark over time. A grease-resistant coating or lining is available on request for richer bakes.

Can window boxes be printed on the inside?

Yes. Inside print is available on boxes, so a pattern or message can show when the lid opens.

Is the board on window boxes suitable for food contact?

Food-contact materials are available on request, and the board is confirmed on your written quote.

How long do printed window bakery boxes take?

Production takes 4–6 business days from proof approval, then free tracked UK delivery takes 2–3 business days.

Can I have two window box sizes with one design?

Yes. We adapt the same artwork to each size and show both on the proof.

Can I try the box design before requesting a quote?

Yes. Upload your logo in Design Your Packaging on our site to see a rough layout first.
