Quick answer
What are pie slice boxes?
Quick answer: pie slice boxes are wedge-shaped folding board boxes that hold a single portion cut from a round pie or tart. A two-piece or hinged lid lifts off the triangular base, so the slice comes out in one piece.

What is a pie slice box?
It is a small triangular box shaped like the slice itself. The narrow point holds the tip of the wedge and the wide end holds the crust. There is almost no empty space for the portion to slide into.
Our photos show the two main builds. One is a kraft or lilac base with a scalloped rim and a separate lid, tied with string and a tag. The other is a one-piece wedge with a leaf print lid that lifts on a hinge.
Which pies and which businesses use them?
Cafés selling pie by the slice are the main users. Farm shops, deli counters, pubs with a dessert board and market traders order them too. They suit any bakery that sells whole pies but wants a single-portion option.
If you also need a box for the whole pie, our bakery boxes and bags range has deeper square styles.
- Apple, cherry and rhubarb pie
- Pumpkin and pecan pie for autumn menus
- Bakewell tart, treacle tart and lemon meringue
- Quiche and savoury tart slices
- Banoffee and other set-filling pies
What size pie slice box do you need?
Start with the diameter of the pie and how many portions you cut. The radius sets the length of the wedge, and the number of slices sets the width at the crust end.
Then measure the depth of the slice at the crust, including any meringue peak or crumble topping. Add 10 to 15 mm above the highest point so the lid does not drag across it.
| Pie diameter | Slices per pie | Typical wedge box (L × W × H) |
|---|---|---|
| 8 inch (about 200 mm) | 6 | Around 115 × 110 × 60 mm |
| 9 inch (about 230 mm) | 8 | Around 130 × 100 × 60 mm |
| 10 inch (about 250 mm) | 8 | Around 140 × 110 × 70 mm |
| 10 inch deep-filled | 10 | Around 140 × 90 × 80 mm |
How do you stop the filling sticking to the box?
Wet fillings like fruit and custard want to touch the walls. A grease-resistant coating on the inside, available on request, keeps juices from soaking into the board.
Most bakers also slip a square of greaseproof paper under the slice, folded up at the sides. You can see this in the gallery, where a sheet of paper wraps the pecan slice. It lifts out cleanly, and the customer can eat straight from the paper.
Our explainer on greaseproof paper versus coated board covers when to use each.
Is a pie box different from a cake slice box?
The shape is similar, but the job is a little different. A pie slice is lower and heavier, with a firm pastry base that can crack if the box flexes.
So pie boxes are usually shallower, with a stiffer base and a wider crust end. A layered sponge slice is taller and lighter, and suits a deeper wedge. If you sell both, we can size two boxes on one quote.
Cheesecake sits between the two. It is dense like pie but has a soft base, so a slightly deeper wedge with a coated inside surface works best.
Printing for every season
Pie sells in waves through the year, so a seasonal print earns its keep. Autumn leaves and gingham, like the boxes in our gallery, suit harvest menus. Pastel colours suit Easter, and a dark pattern works for Halloween pumpkin pie.
Full colour CMYK prints patterns edge to edge. One colour on kraft keeps a year-round box simple, with a sticker or string tag for the seasonal touch. Matte or gloss varnish and uncoated board are all options.
Inside print is available too. A reheating note for quiche, or the name of the orchard behind your apples, gives the customer something to read under the lid.
Should savoury slices go in the same box?
Quiche and savoury tart slices fit the same wedge, but they are often served warm. Let them cool for a few minutes before closing the lid, or steam will soften the pastry.
If you sell warm and cold slices from one counter, print the box in a neutral design. A coloured sticker on the lid can tell staff which is which.
Pubs selling pork pie or game pie by the wedge use the same box. A plain kraft base with a one colour lid suits a hearty, savoury menu.
Packing and counter tips
A wedge box stands steady on its wide end, so several can be lined up in a carrier bag without tipping.
- Cut the pie fully chilled for clean edges that fit the box
- Slide the slice in tip first, using a cake lifter
- Keep a stack of folded bases beside the pie stand
- Tie string around the lid for gift slices, as in our photos
- Write the flavour on the tag rather than the box
Can pie slice boxes go out on delivery?
Yes, with a little care. A wedge on its own can tip in a delivery bag, so stand boxes upright on their wide end and pack them side by side.
For an order of several slices, place them in a larger carrier box or a paper bag with a flat base. Our printed takeaway paper bags hold a few wedges level.
Pick a closure that will not open on its own. A tuck flap or a lid tied with string holds better than a loose lid on a bumpy ride.
What mistakes do cafés make with pie boxes?
The biggest is sizing the box from a raw pie. Pastry shrinks a little in the oven and fillings settle, so measure a baked and cooled slice.
Another is cutting more slices than the box was made for. A thinner wedge rattles about, and a thicker one gets squeezed. Pick a portion size and keep to it. Some cafés also choose a very thin board, which bends when a heavy fruit slice is lifted.

Pie Slice Boxes: questions buyers ask
Still unsure? Call +44 7578 382054, ask us on WhatsApp or write to info@thefoodpackaging.co.uk.
How many pie slice boxes do I need per pie?
One per portion, so a 9 inch pie cut in eight needs eight boxes. Order a few spare for broken slices and tasters.
Can pie slice boxes hold quiche?
Yes. Quiche slices fit the same wedge shape. Let warm quiche cool briefly before closing the lid to protect the pastry.
Do pie slice boxes have a separate lid?
They can. We make a two-piece style with a lift-off lid and a one-piece style with a hinged lid.
Will fruit filling soak through a pie box?
A grease-resistant coating on request keeps juices on the inside surface. A sheet of greaseproof paper under the slice helps too.
Can I get a scalloped edge on a pie box?
Yes, a scalloped rim on the base is possible on suitable styles. It shows on your free proof before printing.
What is the best pie box size for a 10 inch pie?
For eight slices, a box around 140 × 110 × 70 mm is a common size. We confirm it against your measured slice.
Can pie slice boxes be printed with an autumn pattern?
Yes. Full colour CMYK prints leaf, gingham or any other pattern across the lid and base.
Are pie boxes strong enough for a heavy slice?
We choose a board that suits the weight of your slice. Tell us the filling and we recommend a board on the quote.
Can I order pie slice boxes for a single season?
Yes. Quantities are quoted per order, so a run just for Halloween or harvest menus is fine to price.
Are food-contact materials available for pie slice boxes?
Food-contact materials are available on request, and the quote confirms the material for your pie.
How soon will printed pie boxes reach my café?
Once the proof is approved, we make pie boxes in 4–6 business days. They then reach your café by free tracked UK delivery within 2–3 business days.
Can I put a whole tart in the same order?
Yes, whole tart and pie boxes can share one quote. Our window bakery boxes for whole bakes suit full tarts.
