What are cake carrier boxes?
Quick answer: cake carrier boxes are folding board boxes with a handle built into the top panels. They hold cupcakes, pastries, dessert selections or a small cake and are carried by hand. Most are printed on every side, since the box is seen as it travels.

What is a cake carrier box?
It is a box you carry by a handle that is part of the box itself. The top panels fold up and lock together, and a cut-out or arched tab forms the grip.
Our photos show six versions. There is a kraft box printed with cupcakes, a white gable with a window showing desserts, and a pink handle-top box with an arched dark handle. An orange box closes with a ribbon bow, and lilac and white gable boxes carry a printed logo.
Because the handle is board, not string or plastic, the box folds flat again for storage. Customers can carry it straight from the counter without asking for a bag.
Who uses carrier boxes?
Bakers whose customers walk away with their order rather than drive. A handle frees up a hand for a coffee, a pushchair or a shopping bag.
For a full cake on a board, a flat box carried from underneath is safer. Our celebration cake boxes sized to your board cover larger cakes.
- High street bakeries selling cupcakes and pastries
- Cafés offering afternoon tea to take away
- Market traders whose customers browse other stalls
- Party hosts sending treat boxes home with guests
- Dessert shops selling mixed selections
Which handle style should you choose?
The handle changes how the box opens, how much it holds and how it looks on the counter. This table compares the three main styles.
| Handle style | How it closes | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Gable box | Sloped top panels meet in a cut-out handle | Cupcakes and pastries in a row |
| Handle-top box | Two arched tabs interlock above a flat lid | Small cakes and dessert selections |
| Ribbon-tie lid | Ribbon through slots forms a loop | Gifts and treat boxes |
| Handle with window | Gable top plus a front window | Counter display before sale |
How much can a carrier box hold?
The handle carries the full weight, so the board matters. Folding board suits four to six cupcakes or a selection of pastries.
For a small cake, a heavier dessert box or anything with a dense filling, ask for E flute corrugated board, about 1.5 mm. It stiffens the handle and stops the base sagging.
Tell us what you put in the box and roughly how heavy a full box is. We suggest the board on your quote.
Corrugated board also keeps its shape better when a full box is set down and picked up many times.
Will the handle crush the topping?
It can if the box is too short. The handle panels fold in over the top of the contents, so the space below the fold must clear the tallest swirl or pastry.
Measure your tallest item and add 15 mm to get the shoulder height. For tall cupcakes, a handle-top box with a flat lid gives more headroom than a gable.
A cupcake insert keeps cakes centred under the handle. Without one, they slide to the low end of the box when it swings.
Grease and buttery pastries
Croissants, chocolate twists and buttercream all leave marks on plain board. A carrier box shows every mark, because it is held at eye level all the way home.
Ask for a grease-resistant lining on the inside if your bakes are rich. A sheet of greaseproof paper under pastries also stops them sticking to the base.
Let pastries cool fully before boxing. Warm butter soaks into board far faster than cold.
Does a carrier box need a lock-bottom base?
For anything heavier than a couple of cupcakes, yes. A lock-bottom base, also called a crash-lock, has flaps that hook together as the box opens. It holds the weight without tape.
A tuck base is cheaper to make and fine for light pastries. It is quicker to fold flat again, but it can open if the box swings and the load shifts.
If staff fold boxes during a rush, a lock-bottom also saves time. The base forms in one movement, and only the handle panels need folding by hand.
How should a carrier box be printed?
A carrier box is seen from every side as it travels down the street, so print all four walls. The kraft box in our photos repeats cupcake illustrations on each face.
Put your logo high on the long sides, where it shows above a customer's hand. The 'Sweet Bites' box in our photos uses a dark band at the base and a row of small bakes in line art.
Full colour CMYK on white board gives bright illustrations. One colour on kraft suits a simpler look. Our tips for print-ready packaging artwork cover bleed and fold lines.
Can carrier boxes be used for parties and events?
Yes, and they are popular for it. A gable box filled with a cupcake, a biscuit and a sweet treat makes a simple party bag that needs no extra wrapping.
For birthdays, baby showers and Halloween parties, one printed box with a sticker for each event keeps costs down. Fold the boxes ahead and fill them on the day.
Caterers sometimes use larger handle-top boxes for packed desserts at outdoor events. Guests carry them to their seats with one hand.
Common carrier box mistakes
Most of these are caught on the free proof if you send a photo of a typical full box.
- Measuring box height to the top of the walls, not the handle fold
- Choosing thin board for a heavy cake
- Skipping an insert so cupcakes slide to one end
- Printing the logo low, where hands and bags hide it
- Filling boxes before the icing has set

What is the difference between a gable box and a handle-top box?
A gable box has sloped top panels meeting in a cut-out handle. A handle-top box has a flat lid with arched tabs that lock above it.
How tall should a cake carrier box be?
Measure your tallest item and add about 15 mm to reach the point where the handle panels fold in.
Can a carrier box take a small 6 inch cake?
Yes. A handle-top box around 180 mm square suits a 6 inch cake, often in E flute corrugated board for stiffness.
Can I get a window in a gable carrier box?
Yes. Front windows are available on gable styles, so customers see the cakes before they buy.
Do carrier boxes come with cupcake inserts?
Inserts are available on request and keep cupcakes centred under the handle.
Is the handle strong enough without a bag?
Yes, when the board suits the load. We suggest folding board or E flute based on what goes in the box.
Can carrier boxes be printed on every side?
Yes. Full colour or one colour print can cover all four walls and the handle panels.
Are ribbon-tie carrier boxes available?
Yes. We cut slots in the lid, and you thread a ribbon through to form the carry loop.
Will pastries leave grease on the box?
Buttery pastries can mark plain board. Ask for a coated inside and a sheet of greaseproof paper under the bakes.
Are food-contact materials available for cake carrier boxes?
Food-contact materials are available on request. We note the board on your quote.
Do you have boxes for doughnuts as well?
Yes. Our printed doughnut boxes are sized for rows of ring and filled doughnuts.
How long will my carrier boxes take?
Carrier boxes are made in 4–6 business days from proof sign-off. A free tracked UK courier then delivers within 2–3 business days.
