What counts as a food box?

On this page, a food box means packaging for food that travels or sits on a shelf before anyone eats it. It covers three main styles, all shown in the photos above.

The first is a corrugated flap-top box, the kind used for weekly veg deliveries. The second is a two-piece box with a separate lid and base, often with hand holes in the sides. The third is a printed folding carton for packaged goods such as powders, grains, teas or snacks.

For hot meals served over a counter, our takeaway boxes are the better fit.

Which food box style suits your product?

Choose the style by how the food moves. Weight, handling and display all point towards one of the three.

Who buys printed food boxes?

Food boxes tend to be ordered by producers and sellers rather than kitchens. The common thread is food that leaves your premises packed, not plated.

What these buyers share is repeat volume. A veg scheme sends the same box every week, so the box becomes the face of the business on each doorstep.

  • Veg box and fruit box schemes delivering weekly
  • Meal kit businesses sending recipes and ingredients
  • Farm shops packing produce for collection
  • Small food brands selling powders, grains or snacks
  • Bakeries sending bread and pastry bundles to cafés
  • Hamper makers packing jars, cheese and treats

How do you size a food box for produce?

Lay out one typical order on a table and measure the space it takes, with the heaviest items at the bottom. Add about 10 mm each way for packing room.

Produce settles in transit, so leave a little height spare. If you pack loose leaves on top, they need air above them, not a lid pressing down. For weekly schemes, a single box size for all orders keeps packing simple, with paper fill for smaller weeks.

Our takeaway and food packaging sizes guide lists common measurements to compare against.

Do food boxes need air holes or a lining?

Fresh fruit and veg give off moisture. Small air holes in the sides of a corrugated box let some of it escape, so the board stays firmer. The lid and base style in our photos uses side holes that double as finger grips.

Dry goods in a carton need no holes, but oily snacks or baked goods may stain the carton. A grease-resistant lining or coating on request deals with that. Food-contact materials are offered on request as well, with the choice confirmed when we quote.

Chilled meal kits need more thought. Ice packs and insulation liners take up space, so measure the box with them in place. Tell us the inner size you need after insulation, and we work out the outer size from there.

How should a printed food box look?

Corrugated boxes suit bold, simple artwork. A large logo and a short line, printed in one or two colours on kraft, reads clearly from across a doorstep or a market stall.

Retail cartons are different. They sit beside other brands, so full colour CMYK helps your pack hold its own. A matte varnish feels premium, while gloss makes colours jump. Leave space for your ingredients panel, weight and barcode, which you supply.

Inside print turns the moment of opening into part of the experience. A recipe card printed on the lid of a meal kit is one example. You can try your logo on Design Your Packaging before asking for a price.

What mistakes do food producers make with boxes?

Most problems trace back to choosing a box before the contents are settled.

  • Choosing E flute for heavy veg boxes that are stacked several high
  • Forgetting space for an ice pack or insulation in chilled kits
  • Printing fine detail on brown corrugated, where it blurs
  • Leaving no room on a carton for labelling text
  • Ordering a size for this season's range, not next season's

How do you pack and store food boxes?

Flat boxes take far less room than built ones, so keep them flat until packing day. Store them off the floor, away from damp walls and cold store doors.

On packing day, fold and tape a batch at once. Pack heavy items first, then soft fruit, then leaves. For lid and base trays, check the lid slides on without catching, then add a label or band if you need it held shut.

Keep a few spare flat boxes by the door for damaged ones. A torn flap on a full veg box is quicker to fix by moving the contents than by taping over it.

Do food boxes work with other packaging?

Often a food box is the outer layer, with smaller packs inside. Bread goes in a paper bag, cheese in waxed or greaseproof wraps, and pastries in their own box.

If you send bakery goods with produce, our printed bakery packaging range has boxes that sit neatly inside a larger carton.

Jars and bottles in a hamper need dividers or paper fill, so they do not knock together on the way.

How do you order custom food boxes?

Quotes are written per order, from £0.25 per unit, with the figure confirmed once style and size are clear.

  1. Pick a style: flap-top, lid and base, or retail carton.
  2. Send internal measurements in mm or inches, and the weight of a full box.
  3. Choose board, print colours and any holes, windows or lining.
  4. Send artwork or ask our designers for free layout help.
  5. Approve your free proof; production starts and takes 4–6 business days.
  6. Boxes arrive by free tracked delivery to a UK address within 2–3 business days.

What is the difference between food boxes and takeaway boxes?

Food boxes carry packaged or fresh food that travels or sits on a shelf. Takeaway boxes hold a hot meal served over the counter.

Can you make a corrugated veg box with my logo?

Yes. We print flap-top corrugated veg boxes in one, two or full colour with your logo and message.

Which board is right for a heavy produce box?

B flute corrugated, about 3 mm thick, suits heavier veg boxes and stacking. E flute suits lighter loads and sharper print.

Can a food box have a separate lid?

Yes. The two-piece lid and base style has a lid that lifts straight off, which suits display at a farm shop or market.

Can you add air holes to a produce box?

Yes. Air holes or hand holes can be cut into corrugated styles to help fresh produce and to make lifting easier.

Do you make small printed cartons for dry food products?

Yes. Tuck-end cartons in white or kraft folding board suit powders, grains, teas and snacks.

Can a food carton have a window?

Yes. A window cut-out can be added on suitable carton styles so buyers see the product.

Will you add my barcode and ingredients to a food box?

We print the text and barcode you supply exactly as provided. The wording and its accuracy are yours to confirm on the proof.

Can meal kit boxes be printed inside?

Yes. Inside print works well for a welcome note or recipe steps on the lid or base.

Are food-contact grades available for food boxes?

Food-contact materials are available on request. Tell us what touches the board and it is confirmed on your quote.

Do food boxes come assembled?

No, they ship flat. Corrugated styles fold and tape by hand, and cartons tuck closed without glue.

Where do I start if I am not sure which food box I need?

Describe your product and how it travels, and we suggest a style. Our food packaging FAQs page also answers common questions.
