What is a taco holder?

A taco holder is a strip of board with curved notches along the top. You fold it into a low stand and drop each taco into a notch. The shell stays on its edge, so the meat, salsa and slaw stay where you put them.

Lay a taco flat and gravity does the rest. A hard shell cracks and spills, and a soft one opens out. That is the problem a holder solves.

Holders also make portion control easier. A three-notch holder tells staff and customers exactly what a portion is, and it looks tidy on a busy counter.

Which taco packaging style suits your service?

The right style depends on whether people eat standing at your stall or carry the food away. Open holders are quickest to serve. Lidded boxes take a few seconds longer but protect the shells on the move.

Do hard and soft shells need different holders?

Yes, a little. Hard shells are rigid and need a deep notch that grips the base. Soft tortillas sag, so they need a holder with higher sides that press the two halves together.

If you serve both, choose a holder sized for your hard shells. The soft tacos will sit slightly lower, but they still stand. Tell us which you sell most and we shape the notch around that.

Corn tortillas are smaller and stiffer than flour ones, and they crack if pushed into a tight notch. If your menu uses corn, allow a slightly wider notch and a lower front edge. Staff can then slide the taco in rather than press it down.

Who buys printed taco boxes?

Taco trucks and street food stalls are the main buyers, followed by restaurants that offer tacos for collection. Our street food packaging checklist helps new traders choose what to order first.

  • Taco trucks working markets and festivals
  • Restaurants running a weekly taco night
  • Pop-up kitchens and supper clubs serving tasting plates
  • Event caterers at weddings and birthday parties
  • Bars that serve small plates of tacos with drinks

What size taco holder fits a 6 inch shell?

Most street tacos use a 6 inch tortilla, about 150 mm across. A notch around 110 to 120 mm wide at the top holds that shell well. Fuller tacos with a lot of filling may need a wider notch.

Smaller 4 inch tacos are common for tasting menus. They need a tighter notch, or they tip over inside it. Send us a shell, or its measurements, and we cut the holder to fit.

ShellNotch width (approx.)Holder length for 3
4 inch mini80 mmAbout 200 mm
6 inch street115 mmAbout 260 mm
8 inch large150 mmAbout 330 mm

How do you keep salsa from soaking the board?

Salsa, lime juice and oil from grilled meat all run down the shell and pool at the base of the notch. Uncoated board softens there, and the holder can sag after ten minutes.

Ask for a grease-resistant coating on the inside. Many traders also lay a square of greaseproof under each taco. Our plain and printed greaseproof paper sheets are cut to sit under a holder.

Printing ideas for taco holders

The front face of a holder is low and wide, so bold shapes work better than long text. Papel picado style cut patterns, chillies and cacti are popular, but your own logo and colours are what people remember.

Full colour CMYK suits bright patterns. One colour on kraft gives a plainer, earthy look. With lidded boxes, the inside of the lid is a good place for a short menu or a hot sauce guide.

Think about how the holder looks from above, too. Customers photograph tacos from the top, so a printed rim or a logo on the inside face shows up in those pictures.

How do you pack tacos for collection orders?

Follow the same order every time so the shells reach the customer standing, not broken.

  1. Fold the stand and slot it into the base of the lidded box.
  2. Place each taco in a notch, filling side up.
  3. Add wet toppings like salsa in a separate pot, not on the taco.
  4. Close the lid without pressing on the shells.
  5. Carry the box level and keep it flat in the bag.

Can taco boxes go out with delivery riders?

They can, with a lidded box and a stand inside. The stand stops the shells sliding into one corner when the rider brakes. Without it, hard shells break on the first roundabout.

Keep the box small enough that the stand fills it. A long box with a short stand leaves room for the tacos to tip. Tell us the stand size you use and we cut the box around it.

Soft tacos travel better than hard ones. If most of your trade is delivery, some traders switch the delivery menu to soft shells and keep hard shells for the counter. A printed takeaway paper bag keeps several boxes level in one order.

Common mistakes with taco packaging

The first is choosing a holder for the shell size and ignoring the filling. A loaded birria taco is much fatter at the top than an empty shell.

The second is pouring sauce on before the taco is boxed for travel. Even a coated holder struggles with a long ride and a lot of liquid. Pack sauces on the side.

The third is a holder that is too shallow. If the notch is short, hard shells lean and crack under the weight of the filling.

How to order custom taco boxes and holders

Tell us how many tacos go in each holder, your shell size and whether you need a lid. Send your logo or a sketch of the look. Quantities are quoted per order, and our designers help with layout for free.

We send a free design proof before printing. After approval, holders are made in 4–6 business days and travel flat by free tracked UK delivery, arriving in 2–3 business days. Any misprint or damage reported within 10 days with photos is reprinted or refunded. Ready to price yours? Request a taco holder quote.

Taco Boxes and Holders: questions buyers ask

Still unsure? Call +44 7578 382054, ask us on WhatsApp or write to info@thefoodpackaging.co.uk.

How many tacos can one holder carry?

We make holders for one, two or three tacos. A longer holder for four is possible if your counter or box allows the length.

Can a taco holder sit inside a takeaway box?

Yes. We size the holder to slot into the base of a lidded box, so the tacos stay upright on the journey.

Do taco holders work for birria tacos with consommé?

The holder keeps the tacos upright, but serve the consommé in a separate pot. Ask for a grease-resistant coating for the dipped shells.

Will a taco holder fold flat for storage?

Holders arrive flat and fold up by hand. Store them flat until service to save space in the truck.

Can you print a pattern on the inside of a taco box lid?

Yes, inside print is available on boxes. Many traders use the lid for a short menu or a hot sauce guide.

What board do you use for taco holders?

We use white or kraft folding board. Food-contact materials are available on request, with the grade set out on your taco holder quote.

Can taco holders be used for Taco Tuesday promotions?

Yes. Some restaurants print a separate design for a weekly taco night, and we quote both designs together.

Do you make taco holders for 4 inch mini tacos?

Yes. Mini tacos need a tighter notch so they do not tip, and we cut it to your shell size.

Can I put nachos and tacos in the same box?

A wider box with a stand at one end can do both. For loaded nachos alone, a tray works better than a holder.

Does salsa make the holder go soft?

Uncoated board softens if salsa pools in the notch. A grease-resistant coating and a square of greaseproof under each taco help a lot.

Will my taco box colours match my food truck?

Send us your colour references and we match them as closely as the board allows. The free proof shows the result before printing.

Where can I see other trays for tacos and nachos?

Our printed nacho trays for loaded nachos pair well with taco holders on the same menu.
