What is a sushi box?

It is a shallow tray with a lid, built around the size of a sushi piece. Maki rolls stand on their cut ends in rows, and nigiri lie side by side. The box keeps those rows tight so nothing tips or slides.

Our photos show the main styles. You can see a dark tray with a lift-off lid and a long single-row pack. There is also a printed hinged box and a presentation box.

Which sushi box style suits your menu?

The style depends on how the sushi is sold. Chilled counters want something people can see into. Delivery wants a firm lid. Platters for parties want a box that looks good opened on a table.

Many sushi bars end up with two styles. A single-row pack for the fridge and a tray with a lid for delivery sets. Both can share one design, which keeps your brand consistent and reorders simple.

Who orders printed sushi boxes?

Sushi bars doing delivery are the main buyers. Supermarket-style chilled counters, poke shops and caterers order them too.

Each buyer cares about something different. A chilled counter needs the pack to look good after hours in a fridge. A caterer needs a platter that can go straight onto a buffet table, with the lid folded out of sight.

  • Sushi restaurants and counters sending out delivery sets
  • Chilled food counters selling single-roll packs
  • Caterers sending sushi platters to offices and parties
  • Food hall stalls with a grab-and-go fridge
  • Event caterers serving canapé-size sushi at weddings

How do you size a sushi box by piece count?

Measure one of your rolls first. A standard maki piece is often about 25 mm across. Eight in a row with a little spacing needs around 200 mm inside length. Then multiply by rows.

Depth matters more than people think. A box around 45 mm deep suits most maki and nigiri. Deeper boxes let pieces topple; shallower ones squash the toppings when the lid closes. Uramaki with heavy toppings, like the rolls in our second photo, may need 50 mm.

Nigiri needs a little extra thought. The fish sits on top of the rice and can slide when the box tilts. Packing nigiri in the middle rows, with maki on the outer rows, gives the topped pieces some protection on every side.

  1. Measure the width and height of your largest piece.
  2. Decide how many pieces sit in each row.
  3. Decide how many rows the set needs.
  4. Add space at one end for soy, ginger or wasabi pots if you include them.
  5. Send us the measurements and we size the tray to fit snugly.

Does chilled sushi make the board soggy?

Chilled rice carries moisture, and a box taken from a fridge into a warm room picks up condensation. Over a long display time, plain board can soften under the rice.

A grease-resistant coating on the inside of the tray handles that well. A sheet of printed greaseproof under the rolls also keeps the base clean. For raw fish, ask us to quote food-contact materials, which are available on request.

Should a sushi box have a window?

For chilled grab-and-go, yes. A window cut-out in the lid lets people see the fish and the colours without opening the pack, and colourful sushi sells itself.

For delivery, a window matters less, because the customer chose online. A solid lid gives a bigger print area for your brand instead. Window cut-outs are available on suitable styles, so tell us which box you have in mind.

How to print a sushi box that looks the part

Dark boards and black print are popular for sushi, because they make the rice and fish stand out. A strong single colour, like the teal box in our photos, works just as well and is easier to spot on a counter.

Use the inside of the lid. When the customer opens a hinged or presentation box, the lid is the first thing they see. A short menu, a note on which piece is which or your social handle all fit there.

Packing sushi for delivery without damage

Delivery is where sushi sets go wrong. A box that is too big lets rolls slide into one corner, and the nigiri toppings slip off. Size the tray snugly and pack pieces tightly in their rows.

Carry sushi boxes flat, never on their side. Stack sets lid to base, and keep them apart from hot dishes in the same order. Our printed paper takeaway bags have a flat base that keeps sushi trays level.

What mistakes do sushi shops make with boxes?

Choosing a box designed for cakes or pastries is a common one. They are often too deep, so pieces tip over. A sushi box should be shallow.

Another is forgetting the sauce pots. If the set includes soy and wasabi, plan space for them at the design stage, not at the packing bench.

The third is a lid that presses on the toppings. Check the depth against your tallest piece, including any garnish.

Finally, check how the box behaves once it is cold. Folding board feels firmer straight from the store room than after a night in a fridge. Test a filled box after a few hours of chilling before you settle the board.

Sushi Boxes: questions buyers ask

Still unsure? Call +44 7578 382054, ask us on WhatsApp or write to info@thefoodpackaging.co.uk.

How deep should a sushi box be?

Around 45 mm suits most maki and nigiri. Rolls with tall toppings may need about 50 mm so the lid does not press on them.

Can a sushi box have space for soy sauce pots?

Yes. We size the tray with room at one end for your sauce pots. Send us the pot size when you ask for a quote.

How many pieces fit in a single-row sushi pack?

Usually 6 to 8 standard maki pieces. We size the length to your own rolls.

Can the inside of a sushi box lid be printed?

Yes. Inside print is available on boxes, and the lid is a good place for a menu or a piece guide.

Is black board available for sushi boxes?

We print dark or black designs on white or kraft board to give that look. Your proof shows exactly how it will appear.

Do sushi boxes work in a chilled display fridge?

Yes. For long display times, choose a grease-resistant coating to help the board cope with condensation.

Can I see the sushi through the box?

Window cut-outs are available on suitable styles. They suit chilled grab-and-go packs best.

What sushi box size suits a party platter?

A box around 340 x 240 mm inside often holds 40 pieces or more. We confirm the size against your platter layout.

Do sushi trays arrive ready folded?

They arrive flat and fold into a tray by hand. Folding a stack before service saves time at packing.

Should sushi boxes be hinged or have a separate lid?

Hinged lids are quicker to pack and keep the lid with the tray. Lift-off lids suit sets where the tray is used as a serving plate.

Is food-contact board available for sushi trays?

Food-contact materials are available on request. The board grade appears on your written quote.

Where can I find other takeaway packs for a sushi menu?

Our takeaway, noodle and salad packaging range has boxes for noodles, salads and hot sides.
