What is sandwich wrapping paper?
Sandwich wrapping paper is a printed sheet, cut to size, that you fold around a sandwich. The wrap keeps the halves together and gives the customer a clean surface to hold.
One photo shows a toastie on a white sheet with an orange repeat logo. Another shows a white sheet with a red line drawing of food. A third shows a printed kraft paper band around a wrapped sandwich.
It is the oldest deli format there is, and still one of the most useful. One sheet costs little and folds to almost any shape. Most delis keep a stack of sheets right beside the slicer.
Who uses printed sandwich paper?
What they share is a menu of freshly made food. Paper suits food that changes shape, which boxes cannot always do.
Sandwich paper also gives small shops a branded look at very low cost per item.
- Delis wrapping sandwiches to order
- Toastie and grilled cheese bars
- Sandwich shops with a made-to-order counter
- Cafés lining plates and baskets for eat-in sandwiches
- Street food traders serving subs and steak sandwiches
- Picnic and hamper makers wrapping each portion
How big should a sandwich wrapping sheet be?
A sheet needs to go round the sandwich with enough overlap to fold the ends. As a rough guide, the sheet should be about three times the width of the sandwich.
A sheet about 300 x 300 mm is a common size for a standard sandwich or toastie. Deep-fill deli sandwiches often need 350 x 400 mm, and long subs a longer sheet.
Too small and the ends will not tuck in. An oversized sheet means staff fold spare paper round every order. Send us your sandwich size in mm or inches and we suggest a sheet.
Greaseproof or kraft: which paper for sandwiches?
Greaseproof paper resists butter, mayo and oil, so the outside stays clean and the print stays sharp. It is the usual pick for toasties, hot subs and anything with sauce.
Kraft paper is brown, strong and slightly textured. It suits cold sandwiches with drier fillings and gives a homemade, bakery look. A grease-resistant coating can be added on request.
We supply food-contact paper on request, and the paper you choose is confirmed on your quote.
If your menu mixes hot and cold, one greaseproof sheet can cover both. It keeps ordering to a single item.
| Paper | Handles | Look |
|---|---|---|
| White greaseproof | Butter, mayo, melted cheese, hot fillings | Bright, shows coloured patterns clearly |
| Brown greaseproof | The same oils and fats | Warm, traditional deli tone |
| Kraft paper | Cold, drier fillings | Natural brown, rustic texture |
| Kraft with coating | Oilier fillings than plain kraft | Kraft look, slower to mark |
How do you wrap a sandwich in paper?
A neat wrap takes about ten seconds once staff have practised. This is the classic deli fold.
New staff pick it up within a shift. Practise on a few plain sheets before using printed ones.
- Turn the sheet print-side down and angle it like a diamond on the board.
- Place the sandwich in the centre, cut side up.
- Fold the near corner over the sandwich, then fold in the two sides.
- Roll the sandwich forward so the far corner wraps round.
- Tuck the last flap underneath, or cut through the middle for two wrapped halves.
Why choose a repeat pattern instead of one logo?
Once a sheet is folded, any single spot may end up underneath. A logo printed once in the middle could be hidden on half your sandwiches.
A repeat pattern shows the brand on every face of the wrap, whichever way it is folded. It also hides small grease marks and creases.
Keep the repeat fairly tight, roughly every 60 to 80 mm, so at least one full logo appears on each side. One colour print is the classic deli choice, though we can also print in two colours or full colour CMYK. Our tips on designing printed food packaging explain how to set up a repeat.
Can wrapping paper double as a liner?
Yes. The same printed sheet can line a basket, a serving tray or a plate for eat-in customers. It catches crumbs and grease and makes the table look branded.
Using one sheet size for both jobs keeps ordering simple. If you mainly need liners, see our printed food basket liners for sizes cut to fit standard baskets.
A printed liner under a burger or a bowl of chips also shows your brand in photos taken at the table.
How do I keep a wrapped sandwich closed?
A good fold holds itself for a short walk. For longer journeys, many delis cut the wrapped sandwich in half through the paper, which locks each half tight.
Another option is a narrow kraft paper band printed with your logo, slid over the wrap. One of our photos shows this style.
Avoid wrapping a toastie too tightly while it is very hot. Trapped steam softens the bread, so leave the ends a little loose.
Kraft bands work best on cold sandwiches. On hot ones, a simple fold with the ends left open is kinder to the bread.
Does sandwich paper work for catering platters?
It does, and it saves a lot of time. Wrap each sandwich half in a printed sheet, then stand the halves cut side up in a tray or catering box.
Guests can pick up a wrapped half without touching the others. Leftovers stay covered, so the platter still looks tidy at the end of a long meeting.
Use a different print colour for vegetarian or vegan fillings. Staff setting out the platter can then group them without reading every label.
For picnic hampers, a wrapped sandwich travels better than one in a bag. The fold holds the fillings in place while the hamper is carried.
What mistakes should I avoid with sandwich paper?
These are the issues we see most often with first orders, and each one is easy to fix before printing.
- Sheets too small to tuck the ends of deep-fill sandwiches
- A single central logo that disappears in the fold
- Plain kraft for mayo-heavy fillings, which marks through
- Wrapping hot toasties tightly and steaming the bread
- Ordering one sheet size for both bagels and long subs

Still unsure? Call +44 7578 382054, ask us on WhatsApp or write to info@thefoodpackaging.co.uk.
What paper is used for sandwich wrapping?
We use greaseproof paper or kraft paper. Greaseproof suits hot or saucy fillings, and kraft suits drier, cold sandwiches.
What size sheet do I need to wrap a sandwich?
Around 300 x 300 mm is a common size for a standard sandwich. Deep-fill and long sandwiches need larger sheets.
Is sandwich wrapping paper printed on both sides?
It is normally printed on one side, which faces out when the sandwich is wrapped.
Can sandwich paper be used to wrap toasties?
Yes. Greaseproof paper handles melted cheese and butter well. Leave the ends a little loose so steam can escape.
Why is a repeat pattern better on wrapping paper?
A repeat shows your brand on every face of the folded wrap, while a single logo can end up underneath.
Can I use sandwich wrapping paper as a tray liner?
Yes. The same sheets line baskets, trays and plates for eat-in customers.
Does sandwich paper come on a roll?
We supply flat cut sheets in your chosen size, which are quicker to use at a busy prep counter.
How do I stop a wrapped sandwich coming open?
Cut through the wrap to halve the sandwich, or use a printed kraft paper band around the middle.
Can kraft sandwich paper handle mayo?
Plain kraft can mark with mayo. Choose greaseproof or ask for a grease-resistant coating on kraft.
Is your sandwich wrapping paper food-contact grade?
Food-contact materials are available on request, and we confirm the paper on your quote.
How is sandwich wrapping paper delivered?
Sheets arrive flat in packs, with free tracked delivery to UK addresses in 2–3 business days.
Can I order wrapping paper to match my sandwich bags?
Yes. Send the same artwork for both and we adapt it to each format on one quote. See our printed paper sandwich bags for the bag sizes.
