What is a loaf cake box?
It is a long, narrow box shaped to the loaf tin. A loaf cake is heavy at the centre and soft on top. The box needs to support the whole length and leave room over the domed crust.
The photos on this page show two approaches. One is a white tuck-end box with a large window and a small name label. The other is a printed sleeve that slips over a loaf still in its paper case. A full colour yellow box, printed with a banana pattern, shows how far the design can go.
Who sells boxed loaf cakes?
Cafés selling whole loaves to take home, farm shops, delis, market bakers and home bakers supplying local shops all use them. A boxed loaf can sit on a shelf all day and still look fresh and tidy.
Loaf boxes often sit beside boxes for smaller bakes, and our range of bakery packaging covers the rest of the counter.
- Banana bread and date loaf
- Lemon drizzle and orange loaf
- Ginger, carrot and coffee walnut loaves
- Fruit cake and tea loaf
- Pound cake and marble cake
What size box fits a 1 lb or 2 lb loaf?
UK loaf tins are usually sold as 1 lb or 2 lb, but the actual size varies by brand. Measure the baked loaf, including any paper case, at its longest, widest and tallest points.
Add about 10 mm to each measurement for easy packing. The dome on a drizzle cake can be taller than you expect, so check the peak.
If you bake both sizes, order two boxes rather than one large one. A 1 lb loaf in a 2 lb box slides about and the ends get bruised.
| Tin | Typical baked loaf | Typical internal box size |
|---|---|---|
| 1 lb | About 180 × 85 × 70 mm | Around 190 × 95 × 80 mm |
| 2 lb | About 220 × 110 × 80 mm | Around 230 × 120 × 90 mm |
| Mini loaf | About 140 × 60 × 50 mm | Around 150 × 70 × 60 mm |
| Half loaf or slab | Your cut length | Sized to the piece |
Box or sleeve: which should you choose?
A full box protects the whole loaf, top and sides. It suits soft cakes, iced tops and anything travelling in a shopping bag.
A sleeve is a band of printed board that wraps around the middle of the loaf. It shows the cake at both ends, uses less board and is quick to slide on. It works best on firm loaves baked in a paper case, like the pink sleeves in our gallery.
Many bakers use both. A sleeve goes on the everyday counter loaf, and a box goes on gift loaves and iced cakes.
Sleeves also make a loaf easy to slice at a café counter. Staff slide the sleeve off, cut a portion, and slide it back over the rest.
How do you leave space for an ingredients label?
Shops that sell pre-packed cakes usually need an ingredients and allergen label on each loaf. The simplest route is a plain panel on the base or back of the box, printed white or left as bare kraft.
Your printed label then sticks on cleanly. Tell us your label size and we leave a panel to match on the proof. We print the box; the wording on your label is yours to check.
Keeping butter and drizzle off the board
Drizzle cakes and buttery loaves can leave marks where they touch the board. A grease-resistant coating on the inside, available on request, keeps the box clean.
Baking in a paper loaf case or tin liner also helps, because the case takes the grease and lifts out with the cake. Our printed loaf tin liners fit the same tins as these boxes.
Wait until a drizzle has fully set before boxing. A tacky glaze will lift off onto the lid and leave a bare patch on the cake.
Should a loaf cake box have a window?
A window lets shoppers see the crumb and the topping, which sells drizzle and fruit cakes well. It is most useful on a shelf where several flavours sit side by side.
A fully printed box, without a window, gives more space for your branding and the flavour name. It also keeps the loaf out of direct light on a sunny shelf. Pick based on where the box will sit most of the day.
Printing ideas for loaf cake packaging
Flavour-led designs sell well, like the banana pattern in our photos. Print the flavour large on the end panels, because that is what shows when boxes stand in a row.
One colour on kraft suits a farmhouse look. Full colour CMYK suits illustration and photography. Matte or gloss varnish and uncoated board are all available, and inside print is possible on boxes.
A seasonal flavour, such as pumpkin loaf for autumn, can share the same box with a printed sticker on top. That keeps one design in use all year.
Can loaf cake boxes go to cafés you supply?
Yes, and this is a common use. Home bakers and small bakeries supplying local cafés send loaves boxed, so the café can slice from the box or sell the loaf whole.
A box with your name on it keeps your brand in front of the café's customers. Print your Instagram handle or email address on a side panel so new buyers can find you.
Stack boxed loaves flat in a crate for the delivery run. A box sized closely to the loaf stops the cake shifting and denting a corner on the way.
Common loaf box mistakes
Each of these is easy to fix at the proof stage, before anything is printed.
- Sizing the box to the tin instead of the baked loaf
- Forgetting the extra height of icing or a crumble top
- Closing the box while the cake is still warm
- Printing the flavour only on the lid, where a stacked shelf hides it
- Leaving no plain space for an ingredients label

Loaf Cake Boxes: questions buyers ask
Still unsure? Call +44 7578 382054, ask us on WhatsApp or write to info@thefoodpackaging.co.uk.
What size box fits a 2 lb loaf cake?
A box around 230 × 120 × 90 mm inside is a common size for a 2 lb loaf. We confirm it against your baked loaf.
Can I get a sleeve instead of a full loaf box?
Yes. A printed sleeve wraps around the middle of the loaf and leaves both ends open. It suits firm loaves in a paper case.
Can a loaf cake box have a window?
Yes, a window cut-out in the lid or side is available on suitable styles.
Can you leave a blank panel for my ingredients label?
Yes. Tell us the label size and we leave a plain panel on the base or back, shown on your proof.
Will banana bread leave grease marks on the box?
It can on plain board. A grease-resistant coating on request, or baking in a paper case, keeps the box clean.
Do you make loaf boxes for mini loaves?
Yes. Mini loaf boxes are often around 150 × 70 × 60 mm inside, made to your own measurements.
Can loaf cake boxes stand on their end on a shelf?
They can, if the loaf is firm and the box is sized closely. Print the flavour on the end panels so it shows either way.
Is kraft or white board better for loaf boxes?
Kraft suits a rustic farm shop look. White makes full colour designs like fruit patterns look brighter.
Can I order loaf boxes and tin liners together?
Yes, both can go on one quote, and we can match the print.
Are food-contact materials available for loaf cake boxes?
Food-contact materials are available on request. Tell us about your loaves and we confirm the board on the quote.
How long until my loaf cake boxes are delivered?
We make loaf boxes in 4–6 business days once you approve the proof. Free tracked delivery to any UK address follows, taking 2–3 business days.
What if I also sell slices of loaf cake?
Single slices fit a smaller box. Our individual cake slice boxes suit single portions.
No question matches that search.
