Quick answer

What are round pizza boxes?

Round pizza boxes are circular cartons made from a shallow round base and a lid that sits over it. They hold a round pizza with almost no empty space and give a lid shaped like a plate for printing. Multi-sided hinged versions are also available for shops that prefer a one-piece box.

What is a round pizza box?

It is a pizza box shaped like the pizza. Most of our photos show the lid-and-base style: a shallow round tray holds the pizza, and a slightly wider round lid sits over its rim.

Two photos show a different approach, with a hinged box made of many short straight sides. It looks almost round but folds from one piece like a square box.

Both keep the pizza centred, because there are no empty corners for it to slide into.

The lid-and-base style is closer to a hat box or a cake tin than to a normal pizza box. That is part of its appeal.

How does a round box compare with a square one?

Square boxes are the standard for good reasons, but round boxes win in some areas. This table sets out the main differences.

Many shops use both. A square box handles the busy delivery trade, and a round one marks out a signature pizza or a premium order.

Who chooses round pizza boxes?

Shops that want to be remembered. A round box is unusual in the UK, so it gets noticed when it arrives at a door or sits on an office desk.

Wood-fired and sourdough pizzerias like it because the box echoes the round, hand-stretched base. Event traders use round boxes for display, stacking them in a column on the counter.

Pizza kits for making at home suit them too. The base, cheese and toppings sit in the round tray, and the lid keeps everything together.

  • Independent pizzerias with a strong visual brand
  • Pizza vans at weddings and festivals
  • Restaurants offering a premium collection service
  • Brands launching a new pizza or a limited menu

How do you size a round pizza box?

Measure the widest point of your baked pizza and add a few millimetres. A 12 inch pizza is roughly 305 mm across, so a round box is often about 310 mm inside.

Wall height depends on your style. Thin bases need about 40 mm, while thicker crusts and generous toppings need 50 mm or more. Our pizza box sizes explained covers inches and millimetres in more depth.

The lid must clear the base rim comfortably. We set that gap on the template so the lid lifts off without catching.

Order one size first if you are new to round boxes. Once it works on your line, add the others in matching artwork.

How should artwork fit a round lid?

Design in circles. A name set around the edge, with an illustration in the centre, suits the shape naturally. Our photos show this with a big central word and small drawings around it.

A design made for a square lid rarely transfers well. Corners get cut off and text ends up near the curved edge. Our designers adapt your artwork to the circle for free, and the guide to designing food packaging has more layout advice.

The lid rim and base wall can carry print too. A repeated pattern or your web address around the rim reads well from any angle.

Inside print works on the underside of the lid. A circular message or pattern there greets the customer as the lid comes off.

Lift-off lid or multi-sided hinged box?

The lift-off style is the most distinctive. It opens like a tin, which customers enjoy, and the lid can be put aside while they eat.

The multi-sided hinged box behaves like a square box. The lid stays attached and tucks shut at the front, which some delivery drivers prefer. For octagons and other shapes, see our octagonal and shaped pizza box styles.

If you are unsure, tell us how your boxes are used. Collection and dine-out suit lift-off lids, while busy delivery runs may suit the hinged style.

Does steam build up in a round box?

Any closed pizza box traps steam, and a close-fitting round box leaves little air space. That can soften a thin base on a long journey.

Small vents in the wall let some steam escape. A grease-resistant lining or coating on request protects the board from cheese oil, which matters more on a box that fits tightly.

Keep travel time in mind. A round box is ideal for collection, short deliveries and eating at events, where the pizza is opened quickly.

For longer journeys, vents matter more. Ask us to add them on the quote and say how far your deliveries usually go.

How to serve pizza in a round box

Round boxes handle a little differently from square ones. These steps help staff get used to them.

Give the round box its own spot at the pass. Mixing it with square boxes slows staff down when orders stack up.

  1. Keep lids and bases in separate stacks beside the oven.
  2. Slide the pizza into the base with a peel or a flat board.
  3. Cut the pizza in the base, keeping the knife clear of the rim.
  4. Lower the lid straight down rather than at an angle.
  5. Carry the box flat, holding the base, not the lid.

What mistakes do shops make with round boxes?

Round boxes reward planning. These are the errors to avoid on a first order.

Talk to your drivers before ordering. They know how boxes travel better than anyone in the kitchen.

  • Sizing the box to the dough rather than the baked pizza
  • Reusing square artwork that gets cropped by the curve
  • Choosing lift-off lids for drivers who stack boxes on bikes
  • Ordering lids and bases in different quantities

Round Pizza Boxes: questions buyers ask

Still unsure? Call +44 7578 382054, ask us on WhatsApp or write to info@thefoodpackaging.co.uk.

How does the lid on a round pizza box stay on?

The lid is slightly wider than the base and sits over its rim. It rests in place by fit, so it lifts straight off.

Is a round pizza box the same as an octagonal one?

Not quite. A true round box has a curved wall and a lift-off lid, while an octagonal box has eight straight sides and a hinged lid.

What size round box fits a 12 inch pizza?

A round box of about 310 mm inside diameter is a common choice. We confirm it against your baked pizza before printing.

Can I print around the edge of a round pizza box?

Yes. The lid rim and base wall can be printed. A repeated pattern or your web address suits the curve well.

Will my square box artwork work on a round lid?

It usually needs adapting. Our designers rework it for the circle for free and show it on your proof.

Do round pizza boxes stack for delivery?

They stack in neat columns. For heavy delivery use, the hinged multi-sided style keeps lids attached.

Are round pizza boxes made from corrugated board?

Yes. They use E flute, about 1.5 mm, or B flute, about 3 mm, with a kraft or white face.

Can a round pizza box have vent holes?

Yes. Small vents in the wall can be added on request to let steam escape.

Which pizza styles suit a round box best?

Hand-stretched and wood-fired pizzas look especially good in one. The box follows the uneven round edge closely.

Are food-contact materials available for round pizza boxes?

Food-contact materials are offered on request. Tell us the pizza style and the quote lists the board.

Can I order round and square pizza boxes in matching artwork?

Yes. Many shops use round boxes for one size and square for the rest. See the full pizza box range for options.

How long do round pizza boxes take to arrive?

Round boxes go into production once you approve the proof, a stage of 4–6 business days. Tracked delivery anywhere in the UK is free and arrives 2–3 business days later.
