Quick answer
What are tall and round cake boxes?
Quick answer: tall cake boxes are deeper than standard cake boxes, made for stacked layers, tiers and tall decorations. Round versions are tubes with a base and lid, sized to the cake's diameter. Most open so the cake goes in from the side or the lid lifts high.

What are tall and round cake boxes?
They are cake boxes built for height or for a round shape. Standard boxes stop at around 130–150 mm tall, which is fine for a sponge but not for a stacked layer cake.
Our photos show both families. A tall white square box opens on one side, with a large window panel and a ribbon handle, around a cake topped with strawberries. Another lowers a separate lid onto a fold-up base. Round tubes stand in three heights with peach lids. A tall white tube has a black rim, and a low blue round box holds a fruit tart.
Which cakes need a tall box?
Any cake taller than about 120 mm from board to top decoration. Modern celebration cakes are often far taller than the tins they were baked in.
Our range of cake and cupcake boxes has standard-height boxes for flatter bakes.
- Four and five layer sponges
- Drip cakes with toppers, macarons and chocolate shards
- Small two-tier cakes for birthdays and christenings
- Cakes with tall sugar flowers or number toppers
- Tall round cakes sold in tube boxes as gifts
How tall should the box be?
Measure from the cake board to the highest point of the decoration, then add 20 mm. Toppers on sticks and sugar flowers count; candles placed later usually do not.
The table gives typical figures, but always measure your own finished cake. A topper added on the day can add 60 mm or more.
| Cake type | Typical total height | Box height to ask for |
|---|---|---|
| Four-layer 6 inch cake | About 150–170 mm | Around 200 mm |
| Drip cake with toppers | About 200–230 mm | Around 250 mm |
| Two-tier 6 and 4 inch | About 250–280 mm | Around 300 mm |
| Two-tier 8 and 6 inch | About 260–300 mm | Around 320 mm |
How does a tall cake go into the box?
Lowering a tall cake into a deep box is risky. Your fingers hit the walls, and the board tilts.
Two designs solve this. A side-opening box, like the first in our photos, lets you slide the cake in on its board and close the front. With a base-and-lid box, you set the cake on a shallow base and lower the tall lid over it.
Round tubes work the same way. The cake sits on the base disc and the tube drops over it.
Round tube or tall square box?
A round tube matches a round cake, looks striking on a counter and suits gift cakes sold already boxed. The cake has less room to move, so measure carefully.
A tall square box is easier to fill and carry, and the corners leave room for your hands under the board. It also packs flat, while a round tube takes more storage space.
Many cake makers use tubes for single-tier gift cakes and square boxes for tiered orders.
Which board holds a tiered cake?
Tiered cakes are heavy, and a tall box has long walls that can bow. For two tiers, ask for E flute corrugated, about 1.5 mm, or B flute, about 3 mm, for the largest sizes.
The cake itself should always sit on a firm board, with dowels in the lower tier. The box protects the cake but does not hold it up. Our cake boards sized to these boxes match these boxes.
A grease-resistant coating on request on the base keeps buttercream and ganache from marking the board under the cake.
Should a tall cake box have a window?
A tall cake is often the centrepiece of a party, and a window lets it be seen before the box opens. Large front and side windows suit square styles.
The tall box in our photos has window panels on several faces. Keep a solid band of board at the top and corners so the box stays rigid.
For drip cakes, check the drip and toppers clear the window by at least 15 mm.
Windows also help at a venue, since staff can see which way round the cake faces before they open the box.
Printing tall and round boxes
Tall walls give you large printable panels. A small logo near the top and a bold pattern lower down looks balanced on a box this size.
On round tubes, print wraps around the whole wall, so place your logo where the join is hidden at the back. Lids can carry a second print, like the script logo on the blue round box in our photos.
Full colour CMYK, one colour and two colour prints are all available, with matte or gloss varnish.
How do you transport a tall cake safely?
A tall cake has a high centre of gravity, so it tips more easily than a flat one. The box helps, but how it travels matters more.
Put the box flat in a car boot or footwell, on a non-slip mat, never on a seat. Brake gently and take corners slowly on the way to the venue.
For a two-tier cake going a long way, ask whether the customer could stack the top tier on arrival. Two shorter boxes travel more safely than one very tall one.
Common tall cake box mistakes
Send a photo of a finished cake with its dimensions, and we check the box against it on the proof.
- Measuring the cake without its toppers
- Choosing a top-opening box for a cake that must be lowered in
- Using folding board for a two-tier cake
- Sizing a round tube to the cake, not the board
- Carrying a tall box by its lid or handle with the cake inside

How tall should a box be for a drip cake with toppers?
Measure to the top of the highest topper and add about 20 mm. Many drip cakes need a box around 250 mm tall.
Can a two-tier cake fit in one of your tall boxes?
Yes. Small two-tier cakes often fit a box around 300 mm tall, in corrugated board for strength.
What is a base-and-lid tall cake box?
The cake sits on a shallow base, and a tall lid lowers over it. You never lower the cake into a deep box.
Do you make round tube cake boxes?
Yes. Round tubes come with a base and lid, sized to your cake board diameter.
Is a round or square tall box easier to use?
Square boxes are easier to fill and pack flat. Round tubes look striking for gift cakes but need more storage space.
Can a tall cake box have a window on more than one side?
Yes, on suitable square styles. We keep solid board at the corners so the box stays rigid.
Which board do you suggest for a heavy tiered cake?
E flute corrugated, about 1.5 mm, for most tiers, or B flute, about 3 mm, for the largest boxes.
Should I measure the cake or the board for a round box?
Measure the board, because it is the widest part, and add a few millimetres so it slides in.
Do you make low round boxes for tarts?
Yes. Low round boxes with a lift-off lid suit tarts and flat round cakes, as shown in our photos.
Are food-contact materials available for tall cake boxes?
Food-contact materials are available on request, and the board is stated on your quote.
What if I also need boxes for single slices of a tall cake?
Tall slices need tall wedges. Our wedge and rectangular cake slice boxes can be sized to four-layer portions.
How quickly can tall cake boxes be made and delivered?
Production takes 4–6 business days after proof sign-off. Free tracked delivery to UK addresses then follows in 2–3 business days.
