Why do bakers use paper bags for bread?
Crusty bread needs to breathe. Sealed in a film bag, a fresh loaf traps its own steam and the crust goes soft and leathery within hours.
Paper lets that moisture escape, so the crust stays crisp for the rest of the day. It also folds over neatly at the top and fits in a shopping bag without slipping.
Our gallery shows the main styles. Look for a white flat bag with a windmill logo and a kraft block-bottom bag that stands on its own. There are also blue and white printed bags holding round loaves.
Who orders printed bread bags?
Craft bakeries, farm shops, delis, market stalls and cafés that bake their own bread order most of them. Restaurants that sell a loaf to take home use them too.
Bread bags are often ordered alongside boxes for pastries and cakes, all within our bakery packaging range for UK bakers.
- Sourdough rounds and bloomers
- Baguettes and long batons
- Tin loaves and sandwich loaves
- Bags of rolls, bagels and buns
- Focaccia slabs and flatbreads
Flat bag or block-bottom bag?
A flat bag is a simple paper envelope with an open top. It is light, quick to fill and ideal for rolls, baguettes and thinner loaves.
A block-bottom bag has a square base and side gussets, so it opens into a box shape and stands up. Round sourdough and tall bloomers fit better, and the bag sits upright on a counter.
Plenty of bakeries keep both on the counter. Flat bags handle the quick roll and baguette sales, while block-bottom bags carry the bigger rounds that cost more and deserve a sturdier bag.
| Feature | Flat bag | Block-bottom bag |
|---|---|---|
| Stands on its own | No | Yes |
| Best for | Rolls, baguettes, flat loaves | Round sourdough, bloomers, tin loaves |
| Space at the counter | Very little, stacks flat | A little more, still ships flat |
| Print area | Front and back | Front, back and gussets |
What size bread bag do you need?
Measure your largest loaf at its widest and tallest point. For a flat bag, add about 30 mm to the width and leave at least 60 mm above the loaf to fold over.
For a block-bottom bag, match the base to the loaf's footprint and the height to the loaf plus a fold. Round sourdough needs a wider base than you might expect, because it spreads as it proves.
We make bags to your measurements in millimetres or inches. The size table above lists common starting points.
Rolls are easier to size by count. Lay out the number you usually sell together, measure the group, and add a little room for the bag to close.
Kraft or white paper?
Kraft paper has a warm, natural brown tone that suits artisan bread. Dark ink shows clearly, and small flour marks hardly show.
White paper gives a cleaner look and makes colours like blue and red stand out, as in the blue bread bag in our gallery. It does show flour and crumbs more, which some bakers like and others do not.
If you sell both everyday loaves and premium bakes, you can split the range. Kraft for the daily bread and white for special loaves gives customers a quick visual cue.
Can paper bread bags hold buttery bakes?
Plain kraft or white paper will mark if you pack brioche, croissants or cheese-topped rolls. For these, choose greaseproof paper or a grease-resistant coating on request.
Many bakeries keep two bags: a plain paper bag for crusty bread and a greaseproof bag for enriched bakes. Our printed greaseproof paper bags are made for the second job.
How should bread bags be printed?
Most bakeries choose one colour on kraft, which is simple and reads well from across a market. Two colour printing adds an accent, like a coloured wheat sprig beside a dark logo.
Full colour CMYK is available for patterns and illustrations. Keep the design away from the top 60 mm, where the bag folds over and hides it.
Print both sides so the logo shows however the bag is carried. Our designers lay out the artwork for free, and you see a proof first.
Paper bags cannot carry inside print, so put everything you want seen on the outer faces.
Should a warm loaf go straight into a paper bag?
Let bread cool for at least an hour before bagging it. A loaf straight from the oven is still releasing steam, and even paper will go damp around it.
If customers buy warm bread, fold the top loosely rather than rolling it tight. The bag still carries the loaf, and steam can escape at the top.
At home, customers can keep the loaf in the same bag on the bread bin shelf. Printing a short storage tip on the back adds a useful touch.
Can bread bags work for markets and events?
Yes, and they suit outdoor selling well. A stack of flat bags takes almost no room on a market table, and a bagged loaf is easy to hand over in a queue.
On a windy day, block-bottom bags stand up and hold their shape while you fill them. Weigh down a stack of flat bags with a bread board so they stay put.
Printed bags also work as favours. Our gallery includes kraft bags printed for a housewarming, holding a small round loaf for each guest. Weddings and birthday parties order them the same way.
Counter tips and common mistakes
A few habits keep the counter quick and the bread looking its best.
- Keep bags flat and dry, well away from the proving cupboard
- Open a stack of block-bottom bags before the morning queue
- Choose a bag long enough that baguettes do not poke out the top
- Avoid printing fine text across the gusset folds
- Do not use a plain paper bag for oily focaccia

Paper Bread Bags: questions buyers ask
Still unsure? Call +44 7578 382054, ask us on WhatsApp or write to info@thefoodpackaging.co.uk.
Do paper bags keep bread crusty?
Yes. Paper lets steam escape, so the crust stays crisp for longer than in a sealed film bag.
What is a block-bottom bread bag?
It is a paper bag with a square base and side gussets. It opens into a box shape and stands upright on the counter.
Can you make long bags for baguettes?
Yes. Flat bags around 120 × 600 mm are a common size for baguettes, made to your own length.
Is kraft or white paper better for bread bags?
Kraft suits an artisan look and hides flour marks. White paper makes bright colours stand out.
Can bread bags be printed on both sides?
Yes. We print the front and back, and gussets on block-bottom bags, so the logo shows whichever way the bag is held.
Will a paper bread bag hold brioche without marking?
Plain paper can mark. Choose greaseproof paper or a grease-resistant coating on request for buttery bakes.
How many rolls fit in a small bread bag?
A flat bag around 180 × 230 mm often holds two to four rolls, depending on their size.
Can I put a warm loaf in a paper bread bag?
Let it cool first if you can. If it must go warm, fold the top loosely so steam escapes.
What size bag fits a large sourdough?
A block-bottom bag around 250 × 120 × 380 mm is a common size for a large round. Send your loaf size and we confirm it.
Are food-contact materials available for bread bags?
Food-contact materials are available on request. We confirm the paper for your bread on the quote.
When will my printed bread bags arrive?
Printing takes 4–6 business days from proof approval, then free tracked UK delivery takes 2–3 business days.
Can I order bread bags and sandwich bags together?
Yes, both can share one quote. See our printed paper sandwich bags for filled rolls and baguettes.
No question matches that search.
