What is a brownie box?
It is a shallow box built around a grid of cut squares. The depth is only a little more than one brownie, so the pieces sit side by side and cannot pile up and squash.
Our gallery shows the range. Look for a long pink box holding twelve decorated squares and a set of patterned tuck boxes stacked three high. A kraft box hides a story card inside its lid, and a navy sleeve slides off a divided tray. There is also a white box tied with gold string.
Which bakes go in a traybake box?
Anything baked in a tin and cut into squares or bars. Brownies are the most common, but the same box suits most of the café cake counter.
These bakes often sell beside loaf cakes and pies, and our bakery packaging collection covers boxes for both.
School fairs, charity bake sales and wedding dessert tables use them too. A box of four squares makes a tidy favour that guests can carry home in a pocket or handbag.
- Chocolate brownies and blondies
- Flapjacks and oat bars
- Rocky road and millionaire's shortbread
- Fudge, tiffin and lemon bars
- Mixed traybake selections for gifts
How many brownies fit in each box size?
Work from your cut size, not the tin. Most cafés cut squares between 45 and 60 mm, and gift brownies are often smaller.
Multiply the square size by the number in each row, then add 5 mm on each side for easy packing. Height should be the thickest square plus about 10 mm.
| Grid | Square size | Typical internal box size |
|---|---|---|
| 2 × 2 (four) | 60 mm | Around 130 × 130 × 45 mm |
| 3 × 2 (six) | 50 mm | Around 160 × 110 × 45 mm |
| 3 × 3 (nine) | 50 mm | Around 165 × 165 × 45 mm |
| 6 × 2 (twelve) | 45 mm | Around 280 × 100 × 40 mm |
| 4 × 4 (sixteen) | 45 mm | Around 190 × 190 × 40 mm |
Which style opens best for gifts?
A tuck-front box with a hinged lid is the quickest to pack and the easiest to open. It suits counter sales and repeat orders.
A tray and sleeve feels more like a present. The customer slides the tray out like a drawer, which is why the navy box in our photos works so well for gifts.
A tray with a lift-off lid sits between the two. It gives the biggest print area on top and shows every square at once when opened.
For counter sales of one or two squares, a small tuck-front box keeps things quick. Save the sleeve for boxes of nine and above, where the extra presentation suits the higher price.
How do you stop toppings sticking to the lid?
Leave at least 10 mm above the tallest topping. Marshmallow, drizzle and sprinkles all add height that a plain brownie does not have.
Let chocolate toppings set fully before boxing. In a warm kitchen, chill the tray briefly so the top firms up and the cut edges stay sharp.
A sheet of greaseproof paper laid over the squares keeps soft toppings off the lid. Our custom greaseproof paper sheets can be printed to match the box.
Board and grease: what holds up?
Brownies are rich in butter and chocolate. Over a day or two, that fat can creep into plain board and leave dark patches on the print.
A grease-resistant coating on the inside, available on request, keeps the board clean. On the outside, kraft is more forgiving of a stray chocolate fingerprint than white.
For a heavy mixed box of twelve or sixteen, ask about E flute corrugated. It is about 1.5 mm thick and keeps the base flat when the box is lifted by one end.
Printing that matches a bold bake
Brownie brands often go loud, with strong colours and hand-drawn patterns. Full colour CMYK covers this edge to edge, and gloss varnish makes it shine.
If you prefer a quieter look, one colour on kraft with a gold string tie works well. Inside print is available on boxes and trays, so the lid can carry a story card design or flavour key. Our designers lay out the artwork for free before you see a proof.
Should brownie boxes be posted?
Many bakers sell brownie gifts online and post them on. Our boxes reach you by free tracked UK delivery, and from there the posting is up to you.
A brownie box is a presentation box, so pack it inside a plain outer carton with a little padding. Fill the box completely so squares cannot shift, and use a sticker seal on the lid.
Brownies keep for a few days, which makes them one of the easier bakes to send. Print a best-before panel or sticker area on the base so customers know when to eat them.
Common mistakes with traybake boxes
Most problems come from cut sizes changing. A new staff member cuts slightly larger squares and the last row will not fit.
Other mistakes are worth knowing too.
Write your cut size on the recipe card and keep a cutting guide by the tins. The box only works if every batch is cut to the same grid.
- Choosing a deep box that lets squares slide and stack
- Forgetting the height of marshmallow or meringue toppings
- Boxing warm brownies, which steam and stick together
- Printing a pale design on kraft, where it loses contrast
Can one box hold different traybakes?
Yes, if you cut every bake to the same square. A selection box of nine with three flavours is a popular gift, and one grid fits them all.
Rocky road and fudge are often denser and shorter than brownies. Use the tallest bake to set the box height, and the others will sit comfortably.
Keep a printed flavour key inside the lid for a mixed box. Customers then know which square is the salted caramel before they bite into the lemon.

Brownie and Traybake Boxes: questions buyers ask
Still unsure? Call +44 7578 382054, ask us on WhatsApp or write to info@thefoodpackaging.co.uk.
How many brownies fit in a standard brownie box?
Nine 50 mm squares is a common gift box, but we make boxes for four up to sixteen. Send your cut size and we size the grid.
Can brownie boxes have a slide-out tray?
Yes. A tray with a slide-on sleeve opens like a drawer and suits gift orders.
Will chocolate brownies leave grease marks on the box?
Plain board can mark over time. A grease-resistant coating on request keeps the inside surface clean.
Can I put flapjacks and brownies in the same box?
Yes, if both are cut to the same square. Size the height to the taller of the two bakes.
What depth should a brownie box be?
Allow the thickest square plus about 10 mm. Most brownie boxes end up between 40 and 50 mm deep inside.
Can you print a message inside the brownie box lid?
Yes. Inside print is available, so the lid can carry a story, flavour list or thank-you note.
Are corrugated brownie boxes available?
Yes, E flute corrugated suits heavier boxes of twelve or sixteen. Folding board suits smaller gift boxes.
Can I order brownie boxes with a window?
A window cut-out in the lid is available on suitable styles. It shows off decorated tops at the counter.
Do you make long brownie boxes for a single row?
Yes. A long box with two rows of six, like the pink box in our photos, is a common request.
Are food-contact materials available for brownie boxes?
Food-contact materials are available on request. We confirm the board for your traybakes on the quote.
How long do custom brownie boxes take?
Production is 4–6 business days after you approve the proof, and free tracked UK delivery adds 2–3 business days.
Can I get a quote for brownie boxes and loaf boxes together?
Yes, both can go on one quote. See our printed boxes for loaf cakes for banana bread and drizzle cakes.
No question matches that search.
