What is a waffle box?
A waffle box is a shallow square box with a lid hinged at the back. It holds a warm waffle flat, with space above for whatever goes on top.
Waffles are sold loaded with cream, fruit, sauce and sweets far more often than plain. That means the box is really sized around the topping, not the waffle.
It also has to cope with warmth. A waffle straight from the iron gives off steam, and a closed box traps it against the crisp surface.
Getting those three things right, the topping room, the steam and the print, is what this page walks through.
What do our photos show?
The first photo shows white boxes printed with a fine grey grid pattern. One is open, holding a square waffle topped with cream and berries, and one sits closed beside a stack of plain waffles.
The second photo shows three printed boxes stacked up, with a yellow drip design round the sides. A round waffle with chocolate and marshmallows sits on top. Menu items run along the side panels, and a social handle sits on the front.
Both use the same hinged lid style. The difference is the print: a quiet pattern on one and a bold, playful wrap on the other.
Who uses printed waffle boxes?
Waffles have moved from the seaside to the high street, and the box travels with them.
For delivery sellers, the box is often the first thing a new customer sees. A printed lid at the door does more for a brand than a plain box with a sticker.
- Dessert shops selling loaded waffles for delivery
- Cafés offering waffles as a weekend brunch takeaway
- Street food traders with a waffle iron at markets
- Seaside kiosks serving waffles with ice cream
- Event caterers running dessert stations
How tall should a waffle box lid be?
Measure your tallest topping, not your plainest waffle. A swirl of cream with a scoop of ice cream can stand 50 mm or more above the waffle.
Follow these steps to size the box.
If your menu has one very tall dish, consider a second, deeper box just for that item. The rest of the menu then fits a lower box that stacks better.
- Measure the width of a waffle from your own iron.
- Build your most loaded menu item and measure its full height.
- Add about 10 mm all round and 10 to 15 mm above the topping.
- Check how many boxes fit in your delivery bag side by side.
- Send the figures and we confirm the inside size on your proof.
Square or round: which box for which waffle?
The shape of your waffle iron decides the box. The table shows the usual match.
Bubble waffles and folded waffles sit differently again. Send a photo of how you serve them and we suggest a box shape that holds them steady.
| Waffle | Box | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Square, single | 130 × 130 mm base | Snug fit stops sliding |
| Round, whole | 180 to 200 mm square base | Corners give room for sauce |
| Round, cut in quarters | 180 mm base | Pieces sit flat and close together |
| Two squares | 240 × 130 mm base | Side by side for sharing |
How do steam and syrup affect the board?
Steam softens a crisp waffle within minutes in a sealed box. Small vent cut-outs on suitable styles let some of it escape, and leaving the lid open until the toppings go on helps too.
Syrup, melted butter and chocolate sauce can mark plain board. A grease-resistant lining or coating is available on request, and food-contact materials are available on request as well. Your board and lining are confirmed on the written quote.
For long delivery trips, corrugated E flute holds its shape better than folding board. The base stays flat even with a heavy loaded waffle inside.
How should a waffle box be printed?
The lid is the main face, but the sides are seen when boxes stack on a counter or in a bag. The drip design in our photos uses every side and reads well from any angle.
A simple repeat pattern, like the grid on the white box, keeps artwork straightforward. Inside print on the lid shows when the customer opens it, which suits a message or a menu. Our guide on preparing artwork for food packaging covers layouts for lids and sides.
Packing waffles for delivery
Add cold toppings last, just before the lid closes. Ice cream on a warm waffle melts fast, so pack it as the rider arrives.
Keep sauce in a separate pot where you can. A waffle that arrives crisp with sauce on the side looks better than one soaked on the way.
Carry boxes flat and avoid stacking more than three. The weight of a full stack presses the lids onto the cream.
Fold a batch of boxes before the rush and keep them away from the waffle irons. Heat and steam near the irons can soften flat board before it is even used.
What goes wrong with waffle box orders?
Most problems come from sizing for a plain waffle.
Building your fullest dish in a sample box before ordering catches most of these in a few minutes.
Tell us about every dish on the menu, not just the bestseller, and we size the range around them.
- Lids too low, so cream sticks to the board
- Boxes too wide, so waffles slide and toppings spill
- No lining, so syrup marks the base
- Closing the lid straight away and trapping steam
- One box size for both square and round waffles

What size box fits one square waffle?
A box about 130 × 130 × 70 mm suits one square waffle with cream and fruit on top.
Can a waffle box hold a round waffle?
Yes. A square box with a 180 to 200 mm base holds a round waffle whole or cut into quarters.
How do I stop waffles going soggy in the box?
Leave the lid open until the toppings go on. Small vent cut-outs on suitable styles let some steam out.
Will syrup mark a waffle box?
Plain board can mark. A grease-resistant lining or coating can be added at the quote stage.
Can I fit ice cream on a waffle in the box?
Yes, if the lid height allows for it. Measure your tallest serve and add 10 to 15 mm.
Are waffle boxes approved for direct food contact?
Food-contact materials are available on request, and the waffle box board is set out on your quote.
Can waffle boxes be printed on every side?
Yes. The lid, sides and inside of the lid can all carry print.
Which board suits waffle delivery orders?
Corrugated E flute holds its shape better on long trips than folding board.
Can I order kraft waffle boxes?
Yes. Kraft board suits a one or two colour logo and a natural look.
Do waffle boxes have a hinged lid?
Yes. The lid is hinged at the back and tucks in at the front to close.
Can I order a box for two waffles?
Yes. A box about 240 × 130 mm holds two square waffles side by side.
Can my waffle boxes match my ice cream cups?
Yes. Many dessert shops use one design across waffles and scoops. See our printed ice cream tubs.
No question matches that search.
