What is a popcorn box?
A popcorn box is a square, open-topped box that gets wider from base to rim. The top edge is often cut in a row of scallops, which gives it the familiar fairground look.
It is cut from a single sheet of folding board and glued along one side. You receive it flat, then press the sides to open it and the base sets in place.
Our photos show red and white stripes, rose-gold chevrons, plain black boxes, a vintage cinema design, a basketball theme and a circus print. All share the same tapered shape.
Who sells popcorn in printed boxes?
Anywhere people buy a snack and then sit down to watch something is a natural fit. The box stands on an armrest, a ledge or a lap without tipping.
Printed boxes also do quiet work for the venue. Your name sits in the hands of every guest for the length of a film, and it turns up in their photos.
- Independent cinemas and film clubs
- Theatres and concert venues with an interval kiosk
- Bowling alleys, soft play centres and family entertainment venues
- Fairground and seaside popcorn kiosks
- Sports grounds selling snacks at half time
- Popcorn brands selling flavoured popcorn at markets
How big should a popcorn box be?
Start with the portion you already sell, by weight or by scoop. Popcorn is light, so the box is sized by volume rather than grams.
A box around 130 mm tall is a common single portion at a film or show. Smaller boxes suit children, and taller ones suit sharing or a meal deal.
The taper matters as much as the height. A wide rim lets popcorn mound above the top, which looks generous at the same weight. A narrow rim looks taller on the shelf but holds less.
| Portion | Typical box shape | Where it sells |
|---|---|---|
| Small | Short box with a narrow base | Kids' tickets, add-ons, sampling |
| Regular | Mid-height box, rim wider than base | Single film or show portion |
| Large | Tall box with a wide scalloped rim | Sharing between two, meal deals |
| Sweet and salted mix | Regular box with a central print panel | Flavour-led popcorn brands |
Board, butter and oil: how does the box hold up?
Plain salted or sweet popcorn is dry, so standard white or kraft folding board copes well. The box keeps its square shape through a full film.
Buttered and toffee popcorn is a different story. Fat can mark the inside of uncoated board and soften the base over time. Ask for a grease-resistant lining or coating on request if you sell butter or caramel styles.
Popcorn served warm gives off a little steam. The open top lets it escape, so the corn stays crisp rather than chewy. Food-contact materials are available on request, and we confirm them with your price.
Which print styles suit a popcorn box?
Vertical stripes are the classic choice because they follow the taper and make the box look taller. One or two colour print on white board recreates that look at a sensible cost.
Themed artwork works for venues and events. A cinema can carry its name in a retro panel, while a sports ground can use team colours.
Full colour CMYK covers photos and illustrations, with matte or gloss varnish for a different finish. For artwork tips, see our guide on designing food packaging that prints well.
Where does artwork sit on a tapered box?
Each of the four panels is a trapezium, wider at the top. A logo placed low on the panel looks smaller, so keep the main mark in the upper half.
The scallops are cut after printing. Leave a clear band below the scalloped edge, so no text is sliced through the middle.
The glued seam runs down one corner. Avoid putting a face, a word or a fine line across that corner, as it may not line up perfectly when folded.
Inside print is possible too. A short message under the rim is seen when the popcorn level drops.
How do staff open and fill a popcorn box?
Opening a few dozen boxes before doors open keeps the queue moving. Flat boxes take very little space under the counter.
- Take a flat box from the bundle and squeeze the two folded edges towards each other.
- Push the base down from inside until it clicks flat and square.
- Stand the open boxes in a row on the counter before the rush starts.
- Fill with the scoop to just above the scallops, then shake gently to settle.
- Top up the dip in the middle so the box looks full when handed over.
Can popcorn boxes stack and travel?
Empty boxes nest inside one another once opened, which helps when you prepare a stack before service. Filled boxes do not stack, because the top is open.
For carrying several boxes to seats, a simple card carrier or tray helps. Our printed food trays for carrying snacks can hold a box and a drink side by side.
Delivered flat, the boxes store in a dry cupboard. Keep them away from the popcorn machine itself, where heat and oil vapour can mark the print.
What mistakes do venues make with popcorn boxes?
Most of these are easy to fix at the proof stage. Tell us how you serve and we will flag them before printing.
- Ordering one size when the price list has three portions
- Choosing uncoated board for buttered or toffee popcorn
- Placing small print near the scallops, where it gets cut
- Running a logo across the glued corner seam
- Storing flat boxes beside the warm popcorn kettle

Why do popcorn boxes have a scalloped top?
The scallops are a traditional fairground and cinema detail. They also soften the rim, so it is more comfortable to reach into.
Do popcorn boxes come flat?
Yes. They are glued and delivered flat in bundles, then opened at the counter with a squeeze and a push on the base.
What size popcorn box is a regular portion?
A box around 130 mm tall is a common regular size. We make each order to your own height in mm or inches.
Can a popcorn box take buttered popcorn?
Yes, but ask for a grease-resistant lining or coating on request. Uncoated board can mark when butter sits against it.
Can popcorn boxes be printed in classic red and white stripes?
Yes. Stripes print in one or two colours on white board, or in full colour CMYK alongside your logo.
Are popcorn boxes kraft or white?
Both are available. White board shows bright colours best, while kraft board gives a natural brown look.
Is the board in your popcorn boxes approved for food contact?
Food-contact materials are available on request for popcorn boxes, confirmed on the written quote.
Can I print inside a popcorn box?
Yes. Inside print on boxes is available, and a short line under the rim shows once the popcorn level drops.
Can popcorn boxes have a window?
Window cut-outs are offered on suitable styles. On a popcorn box, ask us first, as a window can weaken a tall, open panel.
Are popcorn boxes good for sweet and salted popcorn?
Yes. Many popcorn brands use one box design for both and print the flavour on a sticker or a separate panel.
How quickly can I get popcorn boxes?
Your popcorn boxes are made in 4–6 business days once the proof is approved. Free tracked delivery to UK addresses then takes 2–3 business days.
Do I need a big order for printed popcorn boxes?
Quantities are quoted per order, so tell us how many boxes your venue uses in a typical month.
No question matches that search.
