Why do macarons need their own box?

A macaron shell is thin, crisp and easy to crack. Drop a loose half-dozen into a bag and you get crumbs, chipped feet and smudged filling.

A box sized to the shell holds each one still. Standing upright in a row, they rest against each other like coins in a roll. Laid flat in a grid, they sit in their own space.

Our gallery shows both. Look for the coral box with six compartments, the white window box tied with ribbon, the gold sleeve and the pastel green tray holding four stacks.

Who buys printed macaron boxes?

Home bakers selling online, dessert cafés, wedding planners and corporate gift buyers all order them. A small box of two or three is one of the most popular wedding favours we see.

Many macaron makers also sell larger bakes, and our full range of bakery packaging covers the boxes for those.

  • Wedding and christening favours of two or three
  • Café counter boxes of six
  • Gift sets of twelve for birthdays and Mother's Day
  • Corporate thank-you gifts with a client's logo
  • Mixed flavour selections for Valentine's or Easter

How many macarons fit in each size?

Most macarons measure about 40 mm across and 20 to 25 mm tall. Standing on their edge in a row, each one takes up roughly 25 mm of length.

So a row of six needs an internal length of about 160 to 165 mm. Larger shells, or ones with thick filling, need more. Always measure a finished batch rather than a single test piece.

Upright row or flat grid?

An upright row shows the side of each shell, so customers see the colour of the filling. It also uses less board, which helps on large favour orders.

A flat grid shows the tops, which is better if you decorate shells with gold leaf, sprinkles or a printed design. It needs a divider insert so the shells do not slide on a smooth tray.

If you sell both ways, keep the same print on two box shapes. Regulars then recognise your brand whether they buy a row of six or a gift grid of twenty-four.

Do macaron boxes need a divider insert?

For a row that fills the box end to end, no. The macarons hold each other in place.

For a part-filled box, or a flat grid, a folded board insert with cradles stops shells rolling. We can quote one alongside the box. It ships flat and folds into place in a few seconds.

Inserts also help when a box mixes macarons with other small treats, such as truffles or meringue kisses. Each piece gets its own cradle and nothing rubs against a neighbour.

Board, print and the pastel look

Pastel colours are the classic macaron palette, and they print best on white folding board. Kraft gives a more rustic, handmade look but tones down light shades.

Full colour CMYK handles soft gradients, gold-effect patterns and illustrated borders. One or two colours keep a favour run simple. Inside print is available, so a tray can carry the flavour list or a thank-you note.

For tips on pale colours and fine lines, see our page on how to design packaging that prints well.

Keeping macarons crisp in the box

Macarons dislike damp and warmth. Box them once they have matured and come to room temperature, never straight from a cold fridge where condensation forms.

Store filled boxes somewhere cool and dry, out of sunlight. Window film can trap a little warmth on a sunny shop counter, so rotate display boxes during the day.

Ganache and buttercream fillings can mark plain board at the edges. A grease-resistant coating is available on request if your fillings are rich.

If you post boxes on to your own customers, pack each one inside a sturdier outer carton. The macaron box protects the shells, but it is not built to survive a parcel sorting belt alone.

Should you choose a window?

A long window strip is the most popular option on macaron boxes. Shoppers choose by colour, and seeing the row of pinks, greens and yellows sells the box on its own.

For wedding favours, many couples choose a printed lid with names and the date instead. The guest opens it at the table, which feels more personal.

A ribbon tied around a window box, like the orange bow in our gallery, adds colour without extra print. Leave a few millimetres of plain board around the window so the ribbon sits flat.

Can macaron boxes be personalised for events?

Yes. Favour boxes are often printed with two names and a date, or a company logo for a launch. The text sits on the lid, and the box itself stays the same size for every guest.

For a mixed event, such as a baby shower with blue and pink shells, one printed design can cover the lot. Ask for a neutral board colour so either shell shade looks right inside.

Let our designers set the names and dates for you. A spelling slip is easy to miss, so read every letter on the proof before you approve it.

What goes wrong with macaron box orders?

Boxes sized to the recipe card rather than the finished batch are the main issue. A slightly fatter filling makes the last shell refuse to fit.

Wedding favour orders sometimes arrive too close to the day. Allow time for the proof, production and delivery, plus an evening for folding a few hundred boxes. A third mistake is a dark full-bleed lid on a pastel brand, which can look heavy beside the shells.

How to order custom macaron boxes

Unit prices begin at £0.25 and every order is confirmed on a written quote. Quantities are quoted per order, so a short favour run is fine to price.

  1. Measure a finished macaron and tell us the count and layout you want.
  2. Share your logo, names or event details for printing.
  3. Review a free proof showing the box, window and any insert.
  4. Production starts after approval and runs 4–6 business days.
  5. Free tracked delivery to your UK address then takes 2–3 business days.

Macaron Boxes: questions buyers ask

Still unsure? Call +44 7578 382054, ask us on WhatsApp or write to info@thefoodpackaging.co.uk.

How many macarons fit in a standard row box?

Six is the most common count for a single row. The exact length depends on the thickness of your shells and filling.

Can you make macaron boxes for wedding favours?

Yes. Boxes of two or three are popular favours, and we can print names and the wedding date on the lid.

Do macaron boxes come with an insert?

A folded board insert with cradles can be quoted with the box. It is most useful for flat grids or part-filled rows.

Will a macaron box keep the shells from cracking?

A box sized closely to the shells stops them moving, which prevents most cracks. Packing them snugly matters as much as the board.

Can a macaron box have a window strip?

Yes. A long window in the lid or sleeve is available on suitable styles and shows the full row of colours.

What board works best for pastel macaron boxes?

White folding board keeps pale shades true. Kraft gives a natural look but makes light colours appear darker.

Can the flavour list be printed inside the macaron box?

Yes. Inside print is available on boxes and trays, so the tray floor or lid can list the flavours.

Should macarons be boxed straight from the fridge?

Let them come to room temperature first. Cold shells can collect condensation inside the box and go soft.

Can I order macaron boxes in more than one size?

Yes. Several sizes can go on one written quote, such as a favour box of three and a gift box of twelve.

Are food-contact materials available for macaron boxes?

Food-contact materials are available on request. We confirm the board for your macarons on the quote.

How far ahead should I order macaron boxes for a wedding?

Allow time for the proof, then 4–6 business days of production and 2–3 business days of free tracked UK delivery. Add a few days to fold them.

Can macaron boxes match my patisserie packaging?

Yes, we can use the same artwork and colours across both. Our printed patisserie gift boxes come in matching styles.
