What is a chip scoop box?

It is the familiar fries carton with a low, curved front and a taller back. The sides flare out from a small flat base.

That shape is built around a chip scoop. The scoop slides in at the low front, the chips drop in, and the taller back stops them falling out.

The box arrives flat with its side seam glued. Squeeze the two folded edges and it pops open, ready to fill.

Because the glued seam is already done, there is no folding or tucking at the fryer. That is a big part of why it is so quick.

Who uses scoop boxes for chips?

The common thread is speed. A scoop box lets one person fill dozens of portions a minute during a rush.

It also shows off the food. Fries standing tall in a branded carton look generous, which matters when people order with their eyes.

  • Burger bars and fast food takeaways serving fries with a meal
  • Fish and chip shops selling a chips-only portion
  • Fairground, festival and seaside stalls
  • Cinemas, bowling alleys and leisure centres
  • Pubs and cafés plating fries for eat-in tables

How do you pick sizes for each portion?

Most sites sell two or three portion sizes, so it makes sense to order a carton for each one. The box then acts as your portion control.

Fill a test carton with your normal scoop and check the chips sit just above the back edge. If they spill over the front, size up.

Printing each size in a different colour helps staff grab the right one fast. Customers also see at a glance which size they paid for.

Send us your portion weight or a carton you already use. Measurements in mm or inches both work.

Do chips go soggy in an open carton?

Much less than in a closed box. The open top lets steam rise straight out, so fries keep their crunch for longer.

That is why scoop boxes suit food eaten within a few minutes. For long delivery runs, a closed or vented box keeps the heat better.

If you do send fries out for delivery, the tuck-top version closes over the chips. Our burger and chip meal boxes are another way to send fries with a burger.

Salt and vinegar also go on more evenly with an open top, because nothing traps the seasoning at one end.

Which board works for fries cartons?

White folding board gives clean, bright print and is the most popular choice. Kraft board gives a natural brown look that hides small oil marks.

Fries shed salt and oil, especially in the first minute. An inner grease-resistant coating keeps the board stiff and the outer print free of dark patches.

The board must also stay rigid when held from one side. A box that folds in the hand tips chips onto the floor, so we match the board weight to the size.

Printing branding on a scoop box

A fries carton has a front panel, a tall back panel and two sides, which gives plenty of room. The tall back panel is the one most people see in photos.

Bold stripes, a big logo and short phrases read well from a distance. Fine detail around the curved lip is lost once the box is full.

A single ink on kraft looks honest and simple, while full CMYK on white suits loud stripes and photos. Matte varnish suits kraft, and gloss makes white boxes look brighter.

Our designers prepare the layout free of charge, and the proof shows exactly where the curve and seam fall.

How do you serve chips quickly in scoop boxes?

Standing cartons upright in a bag stops chips spilling into the burger. Put the carton in last so it stays on top.

  1. Open a row of cartons before service and stand them in a rack near the fryer.
  2. Shake the fryer basket and tip the chips into the holding station.
  3. Push the scoop through the chips and slide it into the low front of the carton.
  4. Lift the scoop out so the chips settle upright against the back.
  5. Season and serve on a tray, or stand the carton in a bag beside the meal.

What mistakes do people make with chip cartons?

Ordering only one size is the most common. Staff then under-fill or over-fill, and portions drift from what the menu promises.

Choosing board that is too light for a large carton is the second. It bends when lifted from one side.

Some sites also print the logo low on the front panel, where the scoop scuffs it and chips hide it. Put the main mark on the taller back panel.

Can you use scoop boxes on a meal tray?

Yes, and it is one of their strengths. The flat base sits steadily on a tray beside a burger box and a drink.

For eat-in service, a scoop box saves a plate and keeps the fries together. Customers can carry the whole tray to a table and clear it into one bin.

Kids meals work well too. A small carton fits inside a meal box or on a tray without crowding the main item.

If your tables are outdoors, choose a slightly heavier board. A light, empty carton blows over easily once the chips are gone.

Scoop box, chip cup or chip cone?

A scoop box stands on its own flat base and fills fastest with a chip scoop. A cone is held in the hand and suits walking. A cup sits in car cup holders and suits drive-through trade.

Many street food traders keep scoop boxes for the counter and a second style for customers on the move. Our street food packaging checklist helps you decide what to order first.

Chip Scoop Boxes: questions buyers ask

Still unsure? Call +44 7578 382054, ask us on WhatsApp or write to info@thefoodpackaging.co.uk.

Why do chip scoop boxes have a curved front?

The low curved front lets a chip scoop slide in and drop the chips in one movement. The taller back holds them upright.

How many chips fit in a regular scoop box?

A regular carton usually holds about 12 oz by volume. We can size the box to the portion you serve.

Can I get chip scoop boxes with a lid?

Yes, a tuck-top version closes over the chips. It suits delivery and orders carried a short distance.

Do scoop boxes keep fries crispy?

The open top lets steam escape, which helps fries stay crisp for a few minutes. They are best eaten soon after serving.

Should each chip portion size have its own colour?

Many sites print each size in a different colour so staff grab the right one fast. It also helps customers see the size they paid for.

Are kraft chip boxes available?

Yes, kraft board gives a natural look and hides small oil marks. White board shows bright logos most clearly.

Will salt and oil mark a printed fries carton?

Ask for a grease-resistant inner coating. It keeps oil from creeping through to the printed panels.

How do chip scoop boxes arrive?

They ship flat with the side seam already glued. Squeeze the folded edges and the carton opens ready to fill.

What is the difference between a chip scoop box and a chip cup?

A scoop box is flared with a curved front for scoop filling. A round chip cup is cylindrical and fits a car cup holder.

Can scoop boxes be used for other foods?

They also suit sweet potato fries, onion rings, churros and popcorn chicken. Size the carton to the food you serve most.

Can chip scoop boxes be made for direct food contact?

Board for direct contact with chips can be specified on request. Your written quote confirms what is supplied.

How much do printed chip scoop boxes cost?

Fries cartons start from £0.25 per unit. Carton size, board and ink all move the figure. The exact price is set on a written quote.
